While you were celebrating Chevy Chase’s midsection and wondering why Eddie Murphy refuses to tell jokes anymore, we were enjoying a pink frosted doughnut (with sprinkles!) while drafting a Fat Tuesday Snow Day edition of the Casual Awards. In advance of a Saturday night showdown against the Blue Demons, we once again celebrate and vilify all of those most deserving. Away we go….

[SwordofBrunner note: Eddie Murphy, apparently, was asked to impersonate Bill Cosby on Celebrity Jeopardy. http://theconcourse.deadspin.com/norm-macdonald-eddie-murphy-was-to-be-cosby-in-celebri-1686686768. I can't believe the world was deprived of this.]

JTIII.

When six players on the same team score 11 or 12 points apiece in the same game, it’s hard to pick just one hero. I mean, we could easily have given the nod to DSR or General Ike, but that would do a disservice to Jabril and our frontcourt studs, Mikael and Josh. Let’s just keep it cool and give the hardware to Coach.

Prior to our week off, JTIII said he intended to "overhaul" a couple of things. Having already replaced Hop with Cope in the starting lineup, we were all curious about what he meant. Would we start running a 1-3-1? Would we start flopping and drawing more charges? Would our pets’ heads start falling off?

To be honest, we really only noticed a few (subtle) changes on Tuesday night: we used a little more full-court pressure; we attacked the glass with much more vigor (hooray 43 rebounds!); we pushed the tempo a bit more and took more shots earlier in the shot clock; and we played defense like a boss. Were any of these changes the result of THE OVERHAUL, or can they be explained away by, I don’t know, PLAYING ST. JOHN’S? The world may never know, unless of course we continue to dominate teams and play like the 1998 New York Yankees.

For now, let’s credit JTIII with making whatever adjustments he made during the long week off. Even if there was only some tinkering here and there, we looked good on Tuesday night. And most importantly, our defense started looking like the defenses we’ve grown accustomed to in the JTIII era. Seven steals and seven blocks? Yes please. 46 points in the second half? I love the spread offense.

The Georgetown Hoyas.

The one thing that clearly WASN’T overhauled was our atrocious free throw shooting. It’s hard to complain about a 22 point victory, but it’s easy to complain when your team shoots 16 for 27 (59%) from the free throw line.

On second thought, let’s just give this award to Joshington. He missed five of seven free throws. He single-handedly brought down our average. Everyone else was pretty decent. Joshua- please, please, please work on your throws.

Isaac Muthaf*cking Copeland.

His stat line was beautiful: 12 points, a career-high ten rebounds, three blocks, two assists, zero turnovers, and one earth-shattering, jaw-dropping one-handed dunk from the Big East logo. Remember when he was the fourth best freshman on the team? My goodness. Watching The General’s improvement over the course of one season reminds me of watching Henry Sims’ progress over the course of FOUR YEARS.

More than anything else, we loved his intensity on the glass. He took good shots and then followed up any misses like a gazelle. He would very often jump high over defenders to snag rebounds before patiently resetting the offense. Length!

And that dunk. Oh, that dunk. The reactions of Tyler Adams (standing and shouting and even getting some sweat on his tasty threads) and Reggie Cameron (high-kicking the air) should tell you everything you need to know. And the best part about that dunk wasn’t even the dunk itself (okay, maybe it was). The best part was when he calmly nailed a three from the top of the key on the next offensive possession. Cope with it, America.

The Jay Wright Award for Dressing for Success:

Not Steve Lavin.

Wear a tie, Stevie! Kudos to the young Georgetown scholar who literally offered to give him a tie at the start of the second half. Precious.

I mean, maybe if Lavin wore a tie, his team would play more organized and less chaotic, erratic basketball. The St. John’s style of play has come to resemble their coach’s wardrobe.

He missed five of six shots from beyond the arc and probably had a couple of rushed looks, but who cares? He did everything this team needed him to do to get the W.

Is DSR still in contention for Big East MVP? Why the hell wouldn’t he be? No one is exactly running away with it. D’Angelo Harrison scores a lot of points, but well, D’Angelo Harrison. LaDontae Henton isn’t even the best player on his team. Kris Dunn is the most NBA-ready guy, but has he put together the best season? Roosevelt Jones? Darrun Hilliard? Maybe. DSR is right there. He’s definitely an all-conference player. If he keeps it up, he has an outside chance to win the award.

If you attended Tuesday night’s game (it’s likely you did not, because of the strange white dust falling from the sky), you missed Gus Johnson's end-of-game conversation about how the biggest draw for young men to attend Georgetown is the school’s proximity to Howard University’s girls.

After saying he went to school with Alonzo Mourning’s wife (a Howard alum), Johnson said that the Hoyas should credit Howard for the key role it has played in helping Georgetown become such a dominant basketball powerhouse over the last few de4cades. It was hilarious, but he was right. Any hard feelings he may have about our program are probably negated by the assistance Big John provided in finding him his first real broadcasting gig many years ago. Love Gus Johnson.

Mikael Hopkins.

While all of you haters were criticizing MY KALE for his most recent missed layup, he was giving you the finger as he coasted his way to 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist in ONLY 20 MINUTES. He hit all five of his field goals, played exceptional defense against the Johnnies and even made a couple of free throws. He doesn’t care that Isaac Copeland is now starting. With better spacing and more opportunities in the paint, Hop is thriving. Lay off of Comrade and let him complete his season-long war of attrition.

Three more things about Hop:

(1) Good for him for not whining about losing his starting spot. Shows a lot of class and leadership. He plays better when Smith is not on the court, so here’s hoping his numbers improve and our team keeps winning.

(2) Hop has always been undersized at the 5 position, but he’s been stuck at the 5 for most of his career. Spacing issues aside, I just feel like Hop is more comfortable at the 5.

(3) Remember when we used to scream at the TV, pleading for Nate Lubick not to take an ill-advised jumper? That never happens with Hop because he never takes perimeter shots. Would it be nice if he could hit those shots? Yes. Should we give him more credit for not forcing those shots when nothing else is there? Absolutely.

Your Georgetown Hoyas. Six players in double figures? Yes please. And Paul White dropped in a cool little six points of his own. This is the second time the Hoyas have had six guys score in double figures, and the sixth (?) time they’ve had at least five guys in double figures.
By the way, in case you missed it, back in October D’Angelo Harrison had this to say about DSR being chosen as the Big East’s preseason player of the year: "They got the wrong guy.
A simpler variant of the standard polo neck is the mock polo neck (or mock turtleneck), that resembles the polo neck with the soft fold at its top and the way it stands up around the neck, but both ends of the tube forming the collar are sewn to the neckline. This is mainly used to achieve the appearance of a polo neck where the fabric would fray, roll, or otherwise behave badly unless sewn. The mock polo neck clings to the neck smoothly, is easy to manufacture, and works well with a zip closure.

Georgetown's "Gyration Master" is back with a happy recap of Tuesday night's win.

This one seemed to have all the makings of a bad game at first. Your Georgetown Hoyas looked underwhelming to start this game, but mercifully picked up the pace, riding a first half 13-0 run and a dominant second half to victory over the Red Storm of St. John's. Fortunately, shortly before the game, as a good omen of what would come, a professor I know from my real-life job at the Theology Department ran over with Mardi Gras beads, placed them over my head, shouted "Let the good times roll!" and then hustled back to his seat. I think that describes the way this game turned out. The Hoyas let the good times roll by spreading out their attack, allowing all five starters as well as 6th man Mikael Hopkins to reach double figures. In fact, there was no single leading scorer, as five players each put up 12 points (Joshua Smith, LJ Peak, Isaac Copeland, D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, and Hopkins.)

To start this game, the Hoyas seemed to struggle with getting it going offensively. Georgetown did not make a 3-pointer in the first half, and early on, struggled to get the ball down low. But after being down 19-17 at the under-8 timeout, the Hoyas went on a 13-0 run, with 5 of those coming from Hopkins. That run was, no doubt, the turning point of the game, and if you wanted to attribute it to a single moment, that would most likely be the technical foul assessed on St. John's guard Rysheed Jordan for arguing a call. I like to think I got in his head, because shortly before, I (deservingly) called him a homophobe. (It worked throughout the game. Jordan only scored 3 points and turned the ball over 5 times. I reminded him in the second half before a 1-and-1 and, no surprise, he missed it.)

The Hoyas defense did a good job containing St. John's star guards D'Angelo Harrison as well as Jordan. The two combine for over 30 ppg but only put up 8 tonight. Despite noteworthy performances from Phil Greene IV and Sir'Dominic Pointer, who put up 18 points and 16 points with 8 rebounds respectively, the Johnnies were unable to get anything going against the Hoyas. Somewhat confusingly, Red Storm coach Steve Lavin, who, judging from his priestly turtleneck/collar combo, should be Fr. Steve Lavin, S.J., did not call a single timeout all game, even when his team was in some brutal slumps. And we think JTIII doesn't call enough timeouts!

Isaac Copeland deserves a shoutout for being ubiquitous on defense, grabbing 5 of his 9 rebounds on the defensive glass and adding 3 blocks. Smith-Rivera also helped by grabbing 10 defensive rebounds as part of his double-double performance. Two more defensive shout-outs: one to Mikael Hopkins, for leading the team with 3 steals, and another to Josh Smith, for blocking a perimeter shot attempt by Amar Alibegovic, or as I like to call him, "Bad Hair Day." (Just know that the picture does not do justice to his awful hair style.)

As for the crowd, the student section had a relatively low turnout, but those who did turn out turned up. The noise was pretty impressive for a midweek snow day crowd. Many people seemed to be deterred by the weather but those brave souls who made it out to the game were loud, proud, and patriotic (the student section theme for the night was "America.") When Isaac Copeland threw down his phenomenal second-half dunk, the crowd went nuts. Prophetically, after seeing Bill Raftery walk by shortly before tipoff, I shouted "Onions!" Raftery turned around as if he was hearing his own name and smiled. I'd assume he used that line for Copeland's jam. There were, however, a fair share of questionable officiating calls, and as I have been trying to avoid using profanities, after one call I shouted "That was ludicrous, preposterous, asinine, absurd!" Stephen A. Smith would be proud. Fortunately, however, those calls were balanced out by a relatively well-called and well-played game (at least on the Hoyas' end.)

This is the sort of game that the Hoyas need to duplicate on Saturday against DePaul. The crowd should be fired up (and likely larger thanks to the fact that it's a weekend and most people's final home game) and the team should be as well. For all the ups and downs and multiple shades of this Hoyas team that we've seen, I can only hope that this one is the one that we will get to see down the stretch. The team is as balanced and deep as ever, and if we continue to play like this, we can expect a strong showing from the Hoyas as we head toward March.

Hoya Saxa! Beat DePaul!

Six Hoyas score in double figures as Georgetown puts the game away after intermission.

Georgetown clamped down defensively early and turned on the afterburners late, blowing out St. John's 79-57 in a convincing reassertion of home court control. Six Hoyas scored in double figures to fuel the one-sided win over the disorganized, borderline hapless Johnnies.

Freshman forward Isaac Copeland once again started Tuesday night, having been inserted in the starting lineup against Seton Hall in place of Mikael Hopkins. Against St. John's, the dividends weren't quite so immediate, as the Hoyas scored just five points in as many minutes to start the game. Even so, Copeland's activity unlocked the first-half offense. St. John's trots out a woefully undersized front court, and fittingly rebounds at league-worst rates. With the Hoyas' outside shots not falling, Copeland and his teammates crashed the offensive glass, generating 10 second-chance points before intermission.

Even so, St. John's held a four-point lead eleven minutes into the game, using nifty ball movement and smart cutting to generate 6 assists on 8 made baskets. But that 8th basket would prove to be the visitors' last before the half, as the Red Storm's offense devolved into one isolated, contested jumper after another. Georgetown's defense kept St. John's in front of it, for the most part keeping ball-handlers out of the lane and using length and size to wall off the rim. In all, the Hoyas yielded just 33 percent from two-point range, continuing to progress toward a near-elite defensive unit, particularly inside the arc.

St. John's also contributed to its own demise. During the drought, the Red Storm missed eight straight field goal attempts and committed five turnovers, subsisting only on free throws. The worst offenders were Johnny guards D'Angelo Harrison and Rysheed Jordan, who combined to make just 1 of 15 shots while committing 6 turnovers (and, in Jordan's case, racking up a T for mouthing off to the ref). The half was punctuated with an emblematically head-scratching possession in which St. John's retook the ball with 35 seconds remaining and unsuccessfully attempted shots with 7 and 5 seconds remaining, apparently with no plan to hold for one shot. The Hoyas entered the half up 10 despite shooting just 36 percent and missing all 9 three-point attempts.

Georgetown's offense came alive after the break and never really let St. John's within arm's reach again. Jabril Trawick hit three three-pointers, all in the second half, as the St. John's defense collapsed on itself. On one confused Red Storm defensive set, Joshua Smith posted up the over-matched Joey De La Rosa, only to have not one, not two, but three smallish St. John's help defenders rush his way. Surveying his open teammates, Smith picked Trawick, who probably penned a 750-word essay on the three-pointer he was about to hit before tickling the twine. In all, Georgetown buried 7 triples on 10 tries after intermission.

The three-pointers weren't the only highlights during Georgetown's 46-point second half. Isaac Copeland shook D'Angelo Harrison with an easy head fake at the three-point line, then found an unobstructed path to the basket that he exploited with a vicious one-handed slam that was perhaps the game's signature moment. Smith dunked on a pair of post-ups, overpowering would-be shot-blockers at the rim. And, apart from some late free-throws, Georgetown held the fort defensively, holding St. John's to just 33 percent shooting and forcing 15 turnovers.

Fittingly for such a balanced effort, five different Hoyas finished with exactly 12 points. One was Smith, whose post bulk was too much for the too small Red Storm, and another was his classmate Hopkins, who also pounded the glass for 8 rebounds and cleaned up on the defensive end (3 steals, 1 block). Many of us foresaw that the undersized Red Storm front line would be no match for Smith, but Hopkins was just adept at pounding the paint Tuesday, making all five of his shots, including a pair of put-backs and a thunderous dunk off of a deft baseline cut. Joining them as co-leading scorer was Copeland, who continues to emerge as a scoring threat, rebounding and defensive asset, and all-around athlete, and D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, who overcame a rough shooting night to lead the team in both rebounds (10) and assists (6). LJ Peak matched those Hoyas' scoring totals, and Trawick came in just a point behind.

Some early-game scuffling on offense aside, there wasn't much to complain about Tuesday night, and plenty to like. The Smith-Hopkins platoon is helpful early in each half, when Copleand's presence creates space on the floor that a Smith-Hopkins pairing cannot. Copeland has range beyond the arc but also is energetic and bouncy around the basket, making him a match-up nightmare. Alternating the two senior bigs also helps later in each half, as foul trouble is less likely to be an issue and JT3 can play the post he thinks best. For the second straight game, Georgetown also played with real energy, particularly on the defensive end, shutting down passing lanes. The Hoyas also appeared to make a concerted effort to turn long rebounds and live-ball turnovers into transition opportunities, moving the ball up the sideline quickly to cutting wings.

The last two wins shift the narrative, and the expectations, for the once free-falling Hoyas. Georgetown now stands at 9-5 in conference, in the thick of a three-team race for second place. The Hoyas still can grab that seed by closing out strong, but doing so will require winning the games they should and maybe even one they shouldn't. NCAA seeding also is at stake with each passing game, as Georgetown currently is slotted as 6 seed by most projection, with plenty of flexibility to move up or down, as results dictate. Georgetown's next opponent is DePaul, which rolls into town on Saturday looking for revenge after Georgetown's spirited win in Chicago last month. For now, though, we can savor a thoroughly satisfying win. Hoya Saxa.

WASHINGTON -- Yeah, that's more like it.

This was the best view from press row in nearly a month as the Hoyas snapped a 2-game home court losing streak. Before the game I tweeted out that I'd never really seen a team warmup like St. John's. I figured they were either really loose or really out of control. As suspected, it was more out of control than loose.

New lineup: This seems to be working pretty well. Copeland is playing at a high level and Hopkins had his best game of the season with 12 points and eight rebounds. I know it's a small sample size but the senior hasn't missed a shot coming off the bench 5-for-5 tonight and 1-for-1 at Seton Hall last week. Oh, and he had a matched a career-high with three steals. After the game - it was a podium game for both Copeland and Hopkins - JT3 said that no one on the team, and perhaps even some assistant coaches, understand what Georgetown wants to do each game. He's not surprised at all that the senior isn't letting the benching have an effect on his play.

Balance: A quick look at the stat sheet probably provides you with JT3's dream scenario. That is, six guys in double figures - five guys with 12 points and one with 11 points. With good ball movement and not a single guy to key in on, that's virtually an impossible offense to guard. Each of the starters took between eight (Trawick) and eleven (Smith-Rivera) shots. Any time Trawick is dropping multiple 3-pointers, the opposition is in serious trouble. No surprise that the last home game in which the senior did so was that court storming W over Nova.

For the Good of the League: Lavin seems like a nice guy after the game but this league needs St. John's to matter and he's just not getting it done. Lavin didn't even use any of his timeouts tonight as he watched his team go the last 8:45 of the first half without a field goal. Seriously, St. John's didn't use one timeout all game. Does he even care?

Numbers: With tonight's win the Hoyas numbers remain strong. Their RPI is up to 20. SOS remains at 2 while their record against the Top 50 improves to 4-8. That may change unless the Johnnies pick up some more wins as they are No. 45. Georgetown's numbers will remain solid assuming they don't pick up a bad loss. Cough, DePaul at home, cough.
Also important is that the Hoyas remain in the mix for the second seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, just a half game behind Butler for that spot.

JT3 on Hopkins: Here is that quote that I mentioned from earlier when JT3 was asked about Hopkins play coming off the bench:
"That's not surprising, Hop is a senior, Hop wants to win. I've said this many times, Hop may understand what his coach wants more than anyone in that locker room, some of the coaches included. Starting or not starting I know he understands what that's about and he's a player. He gets in there and plays."
