Another piece of scheduling news shook loose yesterday with the Georgetown Hoyas set to host the Northwestern Wildcats in this year’s Gavitt Games between the BIG EAST and the Big Ten.

This will be the first meeting between Northwestern and Georgetown. Last season, the Wildcats (15-16), led by Chris Collins in his 9th year, were ranked 87th on Kenpom.
The Gavitt Games are traditionally weekday games in the middle of November. The Hoyas were not in the Gavitt Games last year and were expected to have a Big Ten matchup early in the season this upcoming year. Georgetown is 1-3 in the Gavitt Tip-of Games with a win over Illinois (2018) and losses to Penn State (2019) and Maryland (2015, 2016).

The word on the street is that Georgetown’s schedule is pretty much set, aside from a few dates and times that may need to be finalized around the Wizards and Capitals’ schedules.

Weeks ago, fans found out about that Georgetown will be a part of the Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic on November 18-20 in Montego Bay. The Hoyas are expected to face Loyola Marymount in Jamaica first.
Georgetown, Wake Forest, La Salle and Loyola Marymount will comprise field for the Jamaica Classic this year, source told @Stadium. Event will take place from Nov. 18-20 at Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Wake Forest and La Salle are also in the early season exempt multi-team event. Green Bay and Utah Valley are also reportedly involved, potentially in a separate bracket and may be taking part in pre-event home matchups.
The other scheduling news for Patrick Ewing and Georgetown at this point, includes the multi-year deals with Syracuse (away, Dec. 10th) and South Carolina (home, TBD). A Big 12 contest at Texas Tech on November 30th was announced, as well.

Hoyas to Face Northwestern in Gavitt Tipoff Games
WASHINGTON – The BIG EAST and Big Ten Conferences have announced the matchups for the seventh Gavitt Tipoff Games with the Hoyas set to face Northwestern at home on Tuesday, November 15. The matchup against the Wildcats is one of eight men’s basketball contests set for Nov. 14-18, 2022 and marks the third announced tilt of the 2022-23 men’s basketball schedule, presented by MedStar Health. Game times and television network assignments will be announced at a later date. All games will be televised on FS1 or BTN.
HOYAS VS. NORTHWESTERN
- This will be the first-ever matchup between the Hoyas and the Wildcats.
- Northwestern went 15-16 overall last season with a 7-13 mark in Big Ten action.
- Georgetown has appeared in the Gavitt Games four times with a 1-3 record and its most recent meeting coming during the 2019-20 season when the Hoyas hosted Penn State to Capital One Arena.
- Head Coach Patrick Ewing recently announced the addition of Assistant Coach Pat Baldwin to his staff. Baldwin is a 1994 graduate of Northwestern and still stands among the top 20 scorers, was a three-time team captain, graduated as the school’s all-time leader in steals and assists, and was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.
ABOUT THE GAVITT TIPOFF GAMES
- The Gavitt Tipoff Games is a unique early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary. The annual series, which is played on school home courts, features games between some area opponents as well as some attractive intersectional matchups.
- The Gavitt Tipoff Games will be played on consecutive days early in the college basketball season. The series will span eight years, with games played at home sites.
- Each BIG EAST team will participate a minimum of six times, while Big Ten programs will take part a minimum of four times.
- The distinctive series between the two conferences is named to honor the late Gavitt, who had a profound and lasting influence on the sport of basketball at the collegiate, professional and Olympic levels. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
