SEEDING: Where the Hoyas Might Land in the BIG EAST Tournament (UPDATED)

Georgetown might be anywhere from #5-#9, but a win Saturday helps greatly

UPDATE 3/7:

The Georgetown Hoyas will face the Marquette Golden Eagles on Wednesday at 3PM to start the BIG EAST Tournament off.

UPDATE 3/6 2PM:

With the loss from a miserable first-half performance at UConn, the Hoyas are limited to seeds 7-9 in the BIG EAST Tournament. The 8 seed vs. 9 seed game is 3PM on Wednesday and the #7 vs. #10 is 6PM.

Perhaps more important than seeding/game-time, Georgetown will face one of Providence, Butler, or Marquette in the first round.

If Villanova wins over Providence today, Hoyas fans might root for Creighton to beat Butler to improve seed and potential second round match-up of a Gillespie-less Villanova or a potentially McDermott-less Creighton. That seems like a coin-flip.

The Georgetown Hoyas have a glimmer of hope to achieve the first-round bye in securing a #5 seed with a win on Saturday at UConn and a combination of wins and losses from some of the Hoyas’ most-hated conference foes. But who are we to root for?

Here are the BIG EAST games this Saturday:

  • Georgetown at UConn 12PM Storrs, Conn. (Gampel Pavilion) CBS
  • Villanova at Providence 2:30 PM Providence, R.I. (Alumni Hall) FOX
  • Butler at Creighton 5 PM Omaha, Neb. (CHI Center) FOX
  • Seton Hall at St. John’s 7 PM Queens, N.Y. (Carnesecca Arena) FS1
  • Xavier at Marquette 9 PM Milwaukee, Wis. (Fiserv Forum) FS1

Here are the BIG EAST standings and win percentages:

  • Villanova 11-3 0.786
  • Creighton 13-6 0.684
  • UConn 10-6 0.625
  • Seton Hall 10-8 0.556
  • St. John’s 9-9 0.5
  • Xavier 6-6 0.5
  • Georgetown 7-8 0.467
  • Providence 8-10 0.444
  • Butler 8-11 0.421
  • Marquette 7-11 0.389
  • DePaul 2-13 0.133

Jaden Daly of Daly Dose of Hoops did quite a bit of the Lord’s work and produced a colorful display of 32 possibilities for seeding based on the final set of BIG EAST games this weekend.

If Georgetown beats UConn on Saturday, the worst seed they achieve would be #7 but the highest could be #5! Hoyas would need Marquette to beat Xavier and Seton Hall to win over St. John’s. If only one of Xavier or St. John’s wins, the Hoyas will be #6. The #6 seed might be one of the most dangerous games with a super-late 9PM start against DePaul. If both XU and SJU win, Georgetown would be 7th and face #10 Marquette in the 6PM first round game.

If GU loses Saturday, their ceiling is #7 and their floor is #9. The Hoyas could only achieve #7 if Villanova holds off Providence and Creighton beats Butler. There are eight situations where, if GU loses to UConn, the Hoyas would achieve the #8 seed and four combinations that produce Georgetown as #9. However, the only difference between #8 and #9 might be who gets to pick the jersey color first as they face-off Wednesday afternoon.

So, now it should be clear what to root for after the Georgetown vs. UConn game on Saturday.

Here’s a look at the bracket and tip-off times for the BIG EAST Tournament set to start next 3PM next Wednesday with 8 vs. 9.
