Former class of 2020 3-star point guard recruit, Tyler Beard, announced that he is taking a post-graduate prep year prior to joining the Georgetown Hoyas. This effectively makes Tyler Beard Ewing’s first 2021 commitment while creating a scholarship opening for 2020.
Hargrave Military Academy is in Virginia, but is about 200 miles away from Georgetown.
Recruiting analysts have indicated that many freshmen may be considering decisions like this directly due to pandemic concerns.
In the first of what could be similar decisions to come, Georgetown bound guard Tyler Beard will take a prep year at Hargrave Military this year & enroll at the Big East program in the fall of 2021 due to the uncertainty related to the ongoing pandemic. https://t.co/0Rfddonsx4

Accordingly, this decision likely does not count to fans as a transfer or decommitment at this time.
Casual Hoya has chronicled the recent defections quite thoroughly. Additionally, in early December, in wake of the December-announced legal issues (and some rather conspicuous involvement of Michigan coaches), 2020 4-star forward Terrance Williams decommitted from Georgetown.
Tyler Beard’s announcement, while unexpected, feels much different—during a time where everything still feels very different. Coach Patrick Ewing is literally recovering from the illness.
Beard accepted his Georgetown offer in January, just two days after Ewing delivered the message in person.
Big fan of Tyler Beard. Has shown this winter that the summer was just a minor bump in the bigger picture of things. Hoyas land a Rivals150 guard that defends, can run a team and is an improved shot maker https://t.co/cR5ERauQu4

As part of a six-man incoming freshman class, Tyler Beard was expected to make an impact on the court next year, despite at least 3 other guards coming into Georgetown.
The good news is that this opens up a scholarship immediately. Perhaps wooing 5-star center Moussa Cisse, before his announcement next week, is still an option.
Without Beard, the freshman class currently consists of Jamari Sibley (F), Kobe Clark (G/F), Collin Holloway (Wing), T.J. Berger (G), and Dante Harris (G). The Hoyas also added Arkansas graduate transfer Jalen Harris (PG) and grad transfer Chudier Bile.
Here is what the expected 2020-2021 roster looks like:
- Jamorko Pickett (F) 6’8”
- Jahvon Blair (G) 6’4”
- Jalen Harris (G) 6’2”
- Chudier Bile (F) 6’6”
- Qudus Wahab (C) 6’11”
- Malcolm Wilson (C) 6’11”
- Timothy Ighoefe (C) 6’11”
- Dante Harris (G) 6’
- Jamari Sibley (F) 6’8”
- Kobe Clark (G/F) 6’6”
- T.J. Berger (G) 6’4”
- Collin Holloway (F) 6’6”
- Chuma Azinge (G, walk-on)
- Jaden Robinson (G, walk-on)
With Georgetown commit Tyler Beard opting to prep for a year, the Hoyas have an open scholarship for 20-21.

This drops the incoming freshman class from 6 to 5 at the moment.
This also explains how Ewing and co were still linked to 2020 recruits and transfers. https://t.co/Ld7w8qyKLw
Best of luck to Tyler Beard.
We’ll be your biggest fans every step you take to get to the HIlltop!
