The Georgetown Basketball Twitter account is joining in the quarantine survey-like fun to see which jerseys we the fans like from the following nine former/retro jerseys.
Perhaps this is no more than a fun exercise, but the data could be useful if Georgetown and Nike/Jordan Brand could take some time to design something classic and cool.
Maybe voting can change your life for the better?
A little background and a better look may be helpful, too. Here are the options:
1. 2002-05 Home White
“Ashanti Cook #0 of the Georgetown Hoyas handles the ball against the Seton Hall Pirates during round one of the Big East Men’s Basketball Championship on March 9, 2005 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.”
These jerseys were pretty sweet when rolled out with Mike Sweetney and the gang in 2002, but stuck around for several seasons.
Fun fact: Ashanti Cook, now an actor, is a consultant for Space Jame 2 and was recently seen in my favorite show “Better Call Saul.”
2. 2013-14 Black Kente
“Jabril Trawick #55 of the Georgetown Hoyas goes for a jam during a college basketball game against the Michigan State Spartans on February 1, 2014 at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. The Hoyas won 64-60.”
3. Home Gray 1994-96 (a.k.a. “Iverson Era Kente”)
Can’t we just bring these out twice a year for GRAY OUT games?
4. 2018-2020 Away Tidal Blue
“Georgetown Hoyas head coach Patrick Ewing talks to center Qudus Wahab (34) during the first half against the Xavier Musketeers at the Cintas Center. Xavier won 66-57. Credit: Frank Victores”
There are a lot of opinions about this teal jersey. Many fans think it’s a jinx. Ewing says it reminds him of his freshman year (image #9). And Jagan Mosely said it’s his favorite. My biggest issue with this is the inconsistency of how the color appears on different screens. It looks fantastic on some photos and then looks green on some broadcasts. There’s a nice teal color out there that Nike needs to find for a third jersey.
5. 2013-2016 Away Navy
“L.J. Peak #0 of the Georgetown Hoyas dribbles up court during a college basketball game against the Seton Hall Pirates at the Prudential Center on February 10, 2015 in Newark, New Jersey. The Hoyas won 86-67.”
6. 2006-07 Away Navy
This jersey has more meaning than looks. However this is not a bad base if you throw some kente on it.
7. 2016-2019 Home Gray
“Rodney Pryor #23 of the Georgetown Hoyas runs up court during a college basketball game against the Xavier Musketeers at the Verizon Center on December 31, 2016 in Washington, DC. The Musketeers won 81-76.”
A strong effort for a new era of kente, this was dropped as the home jersey this past season in favor of the white jersey (yikes) and the throwback that has been used for the past 5+ seasons. It’s cool, but time for a change.
8. 2015-2020 Home Gray Throwback
9. 1981-82 Away Blue
Sleepy Floyd getting fouled by notorious hack Michael Jordan during the 1982 championship game.
This is the “inspiration” for the tidal blue throwbacks. I feel like it’s a nicer blue, but photo and TV quality of the 80s make it hard to tell.
Home, Mike Sweetney circa March 2001.
Away Tidal Blue circa 2002-05 - “Rudy Gay #22 of the Connecticut Huskies drives the ball against Jeff Green #32 and Brandon Bowman #1 of the Georgetown Hoyas during the quaterfinal round of the Big East Men’s Basketball Championship on March 10, 2005 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.”
Home (Alternate?) circa 2014.
Away Blue 2005-06 — “Georgetown’s Jonathan Wallace looks to drive the lane in Saturday night’s game against South Florida at the Sundome in Tampa, Florida on March 4, 2006.”
Jahidi White circa 1998
Kevin Braswell circa 2000.
Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje circa 2000.
Nope circa 2011.
Big collars, kente on back/sides circa 2007-09 - “Greg Monroe #10 and Henry Sims #30 of the Georgetown Hoyas talk during a timeout during the game against the Syracuse Orange on February 14, 2009 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York.”
“Roy Hibbert #55 of the Georgetown Hoyas reacts after a play against the West Virginia Mountaineers during day three of the 2008 Big East Men’s Basketball Championship at Madison Square Garden on March 14, 2008 in New York City.”
Otherlla Harrington circa 1996 (Iverson Era Kente, Away).
“Alonzo Mourning #33 of the Georgetown Hoyas posts up against St. John’s Red Men circa 1989 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.”
“Center Patrick Ewing #33 of the Georgetown University Hoyas reaches for the ball during a Big East college basketball game against the University of Pittsburgh Panthers at the Fitzgerald Fieldhouse on January 28, 1984 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Hoyas defeated the Pitt Panthers 63-52.”
“Greg Whittington #2 of the Georgetown Hoyas drives on Michael Frazier II #20 of the Florida Gators during the Navy-Marine Corps Classic aboard the USS Bataan at Mayport Naval Air Station on November 9, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida.”
“Georgetown Hoyas’ Joshua Smith (C) dunks the ball against Oregon Ducks’ Richard Amardi (R) during the Armed Forces Classic of the US college basketball between Oregon and Georgetown at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, 70 km south of Seoul, on November 9, 2013. The Armed Forces Classic, ESPNs newest basketball event, is poised to bring premier college basketball games to the US troops, wherever they are stationed, around the world.”
“D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera #4, Otto Porter Jr. #22 and Nate Lubick #34 of the Georgetown Hoyas look on against the Cincinnati Bearcats during the game at Fifth Third Arena on February 15, 2013 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Georgetown won 62-55.”
