Great to see so many coaches wear the towel in tribute to John Thompson. He lives on through all of us he impacted.

Navy has beaten George Washington (78-71; Wednesday) and Mount St. Mary’s (73-67; Saturday), but lost to Maryland (52-82; Friday). Hoyas fans hope the Midshipmen are a little tired and perform more like the Maryland game than the quick start the Mids had against GW.
Of course, a little competition for Georgetown is likely a good thing ahead of (hopefully) imminent games against WVU and Villanova.
While the Hoyas starters appear to be set, Patrick Ewing needs to figure out his bench depth, rotation, and defenses. Understanding (and sharing) what’s going on with the injured Chudier Bile and 4-star recruit Jamari Sibley is a good first step. Identifying whether the poor shooting comes from bad rims or under-prepared legs is probably second on the list.

Navy holds off Mount St. Mary’s behind strong effort from Cam Davis | CAPITALGAZETTE
The Mountaineers did their best to erase a 10-point deficit in the final 2 minutes, but the Midshipmen held on behind a strong performance from guard Cam Davis. The senior poured in a game-high 26 points and was perfect from the free-throw line in leading Navy past the Mount 73-67.
Navy (2-1) built a comfortable lead early in the second half, and still led by double-digits in the final minutes before Mount St. Mary’s crafted a comeback that fell a little short. Davis had 10 points in the final 4:08, all from the free-throw line, and scored 20 in the second half. He finished 10-for-10 from the line, and eclipsed 1,000 career points in the victory.
“I think we just focused on some of our pillars,” Davis said about the second half. “We wanted to come out and guard a little bit better. We wanted to come out and give them a better look defensively, and we also wanted to crash the glass a little better and limit their second-chance points.”
Cam Davis stepped into a larger role for @NavyBasketball last season, leading the team in scoring and assists, and even more is expected from Davis as a senior. But basketball is just part of the story for the ocean engineering major. https://t.co/cVYotDq1q1

Davis led all scorers in the game with 26 points, including a 10-for-10 effort at the foul line. John Carter, Jr., was the only other Navy player in double figures with 10 points. The Mount shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) in the game while hitting 11-of-27 (.407) from three-point range. Navy converted 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field while going 4-of-15 (.267) from beyond the arc. Navy was 19-of-22 (.864) at the foul line while the Mount was 6-of-10 (.600).
A slow start to the second half by the Mount proved to be the difference in the game. The Midshipmen outscored the Mountaineers, 15-to-2, over the first seven minutes of the half to take a control of the game. The Mount went just 1-for-8 from the field with four turnovers over that stretch, allowing Navy to build its lead. Navy held a 53-37 advantage before the Mount made a comeback bid.
Opponent Preview: Navy Midshipmen | 247SPORTS
Navy will not blow you away in terms of athleticism and speed, but their offense emphasizes moving the ball quickly and consistently, and cutting off-ball, especially when the ball moves to the high post. On defense, Navy mixes in a steady dose of a 2-3 zone, which will be a tough test for a Georgetown team that is still figuring things out on offense, especially in the halfcourt.
Davis spearheads a back court that figures to be Navy’s strength with juniors John Carter Jr. and Greg Summers also returning as starters. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound junior is a pivotal figure for the Midshipmen, a Patriot League All-Rookie team pick in 2019 who suffered through somewhat of a sophomore slump...
Carter was second on the squad in scoring (10.6 average) last season but shot just 33 percent from the field. He had the most 3-point attempts (203) among the Mids but made just 28 percent (58). On a positive note, Carter did contribute in other ways — leading Navy with 27 steals and ranking second in rebounding average (4.9). After almost a month of preseason practice, DeChellis feels the Tennessee native is poised for a bounce-back performance...
Summers had a breakout campaign as a sophomore, starting all 30 games and leading Navy with 6.8 rebounds per game. The versatile 6-foot-4, 200-pound wing finished third on the team in scoring (9.7 points), while ranking second in both assists (70) and steals (26).
With four returning starters and a total of 10 returning lettermen, @NavyBasketball is considered a contender for the Patriot League championship. https://t.co/ySknQndSKl pic.twitter.com/yUrU24fENJ

Davis was 5-8 from the field and 10-10 from the free throw line to account for his 20-point second-half performance. He accounted for just under half of Navy’s 41 points scored after intermission. Davis ended the game with 26 points to nearly match his career-best effort of 28, but surpass the 25 points he had combined to score in Navy’s first two games of the season. He is the first Mid in three years and three days to reach the 1,000-point plateau (Shawn Anderson, Nov. 25, 2017). Davis needed 96 games to score 1,000 points, which ranks 18th among the 25 Mids who have attained the milestone.
Navy will close out its season-opening stretch of four games in seven days Tuesday when the Mids travel to Washington, D.C., to face Georgetown in the university’s on-campus McDonough Arena. The game will air nationally on the CBS Sports Network starting at 6 p.m.

Speaking of Navy, the Mids bring back four starters from last year’s 14-16 team (8-10 in league play). Senior Cam Davis (16 points per game last winter) provides the main offense threat on the perimeter, while juniors John Carter Jr. (11 points with 5 rebounds) and Greg Summers (10 points with 7 rebounds) anchor things inside.
Will they develop a three-point threat? The Mids ranked last in the conference from outside the arc last season. Two years ago, coach Ed DeChellis delivered the program’s first 20-win season since 2000. Could his 10th season in Annapolis result in the school’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1998?
Maryland men’s basketball vs. Navy preview | TESTUDOTIMES
Players to know Cam Davis, senior guard, 6’0, 183 lbs., No. 22. Davis played a team-high 33 minutes in the season opener and tallied 15 points, seven assists and two rebounds. Last season, Davis averaged 16.8 points and 2.7 assists per game as a junior and cemented himself as an upperclassmen leader. Davis scored 12 points in 32 minutes of action against the Terps in 2018.
John Carter Jr., junior guard, 6’3, 195 lbs., No. 1. Carter burst onto the scene as a freshman, earning Patriot League all-rookie honors in 2019. As a sophomore, he started all 30 games and averaged 10.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. To kick off his junior campaign, Carter led Navy with 17 points, including a 4-of-6 mark from three-point range, and added six assists.
Tyler Nelson, sophomore forward, 6’6, 214 lbs., No. 5. The Naval Academy is often mismatched in the frontcourt due to weight limits for midshipmen, but Nelson was able to hold his own against the Colonials. Nelson finished the season opener with 12 points, four assists and three rebounds. He also shot 5-of-7 from the field, including hitting both of his three-point attempts.
4. Cam Davis had 26 points as Navy dispatched Mount St. Mary's 73-67. Midshipmen (2-1), who were playing for the third time in four days, had only six turnovers in the victory.

The Georgetown University women’s basketball season opener at the University of Richmond scheduled for Sunday has been postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test within the Hoya women’s basketball team. This decision was made on Friday following consultation with the University’s Public Health Office and the Department’s medical staff.
The individual testing positive was a tier 1 member of the team. As a result of contact tracing, all team personnel will quarantine following University, DC Department of Health and CDC guidelines. The status of future games will be announced at a later date.
