WASHINGTON – For the fourth time this season, Georgetown University guard James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office on Sunday.
Akinjo led the Hoyas with 19.0 points and 6.0 assist per game in a 1-1 week. He opened with 13 points, seven assists and five rebounds in a loss at DePaul before adding 25 points, five assists and five rebounds in a road upset victory over No. 16 Marquette while going 5-for-8 from downtown against the Golden Eagles.
For the season, Akinjo leads all BIG EAST players with 5.4 assists per game and is second among all freshmen in scoring with 13.4 points per game.
The Hoyas closed out the 2018-19 regular season 19-12 overall and 9-9 in BIG EAST play to finish tied for third place. Georgetown will be the sixth seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament, Presented by Jeep and face third-seeded Seton Hall on Thursday, March 14 at 9:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden in New York.
