LINKS: Hoyas, Fans Upset in UNCG Performance

The Georgetown Hoyas (4-3) were beaten by the UNC Greensboro Spartans (6-2) on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena, 65-61. Be sure to check out Kente Korner for some in-depth thoughts on the program from the Washington Post’s Ava Wallace.

The day before, Georgetown received a commitment from 4-star forward, Jamari Sibley. Earlier in the week, the Hoyas announced participation in a restructured 2020 Wooden Legacy event with Kansas, Virginia, and UCLA. Things were going well for the Hoyas.

The Hoyas held a 54-51 lead on a jumper by Myron Gardner with 6:34 remaining but he missed the foul shot and James Dickey grabbed the rebound. Massey then hit a 3-pointer from the left side for a 54-54 tie and that started the Spartans’ game-ending 14-7 stretch. UNC-Greensboro (6-2) took the lead for good when Keyshaun Langley stripped the ball from James Akinjo with 6:08 remaining. Four seconds later Miller finished the fast break with a dunk for a 56-54 advantage.

Keyshaun Langley scored 11 points and made four free throws in the final 16 seconds. UNCG led for the final six minutes, Key performers UNCG: James Dickey had 10 points and eight rebounds for Greensboro (6-2). Malik Massey added 10 points. Mohammed Abdulsalam had seven steals.

In the early going, Yurtseven warded off foul trouble, picking up his first call of the game less than five minutes into the first half. Yet, he also struggled to find his shot, going 2 for 6 in the first ten minutes of the game. McClung faced similar struggles, hitting just two of his seven attempts in the first half.

“We got great shots. We just didn’t make them,” Ewing said. “If your best players are not going to shoot a great percentage, then it’s going to be hard to win.”

The absence of Mac McClung and Josh LeBlanc in the 2nd half raised eyebrows. Ewing chose to keep his starting group on the bench until there were three minutes left, which was perhaps too long. LeBlanc surprising saw just 11 minutes on the floor in a game where his energy was needed...

The game can perhaps best be summarized with the play that Ewing drew up for Jahvon Blair with 7 seconds to go. This is not the guy to go to when the game is on the line. Though the Hoyas were in the lead for 23 minutes of the game, they would have been lucky to escape with a win. Perhaps it was a lack of preparation and underestimation of UNCG. Or maybe the Hoyas just aren’t as good as they showed at the Garden.

The loss, while not terrible from a metrics standpoint—UNCG is one of the stronger mid-majors out there—is damning in that it leaves Georgetown with very little, if any, wiggle room for the remainder of its nonconference schedule.

Georgetown Coach Patrick Ewing – who as a player led the Hoyas to a national championship in 1984 – watched with frustration as UNCG used crisp passing and a trapping defense to hand the Hoyas the loss. Keyshaun Langley, James Dickey, Malik Massey and Angelo Allegri led a very balanced scoring attack for UNCG and the pesky defense gave the Hoyas trouble all game long resulting in 14 steals and creating other turnovers.

“Oh, I’ve seen multiple different versions of my team,” Ewing said, sounding as solemn as he has during his three-year tenure. “. . . You can’t get up for the Texases and the Dukes and not show up for the teams you perceive as not good. Greensboro is very good; they’re a great team. They’ve battled a lot of other big programs; you have to take your hat off to them. They played well, they played hard, they scrapped, they clawed. They outrebounded us; we gave up another 16 offensive rebounds. We gave up 19 to Duke, 16 to them. . . . I told them, ‘Who’s going to go get it?’ I can’t play anymore. I can’t go out there and rebound and do the things we need to do to win. It’s got to be them.”

Jamari Sibley’s basketball journey took him from Milwaukee to Virginia this year. Next year the former Nicolet standout will be on the move again, this time to the nation’s capital. The 6-foot-9 forward, who announced his transfer from Nicolet to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, in July, will play his college ball for Patrick Ewing and Georgetown.

Sibley can score on all three-levels and thrives in the open court. He is also a versatile defender. Sibley transferred to Oak Hill Academy this summer after winning a state title at Nicolet High School (Glendale, Wisc.), where he averaged 19.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 59% from the floor through just 29% from beyond the arc.
