A team of Hoya alums will play for the chance at the $2 million prize in this summer’s The Basketball Tournament. While Hoyas such as Austin Freeman, Chris Wright, Jason Clark and Michael Sweetney have played on separate teams previously, never before has there been a unified team of Georgetown players.
The Tournament has partnered with the Big East Conference and will hold a mini-Tournament of Georgetown, St. John’s, Marquette and Seton Hall alums with the winning squad advancing into the Sweet 16 of the larger tournament.

Alumni teams from Marquette, Georgetown, Seton Hall and St John’s to Compete in the Inaugural Event, with Winner Advancing to TBT’s Super 16 for Shot at $2 Million
BOSTON – May 24, 2018 – The Basketball Tournament (TBT) – the $2 million, winner-take-all summer basketball event broadcast live on ESPN – announced today a partnership with the Big East Conference to host a four-team tournament at Marquette University, comprised of alumni teams from four Big East schools.
Alumni teams from Marquette, Georgetown, Seton Hall and St. John’s will face off at Marquette University’s Al McGuire Center June 30 and July 1, with the winner advancing to TBT’s Super 16. The Marquette team – Golden Eagles Alumni – has made it to TBT’s Round of 8 each of the past two years. Two members from last year’s team – Jamil Wilson & Dwight Buycks – went on to appear in the NBA during the 2017-18 season. The other three alumni teams are new to TBT.
“The Big East has always been synonymous with big-time college basketball, and this partnership shows how forward-thinking they are when it comes to alumni,” said Jon Mugar, Founder and CEO of TBT. “Over the past four years, our alumni teams have experienced a massive outpouring of support from athletic departments, coaches and fans, who love engaging with and supporting former student-athletes. And with this partnership, the Big East takes a leadership position in supporting these alumni as well.”
“We are extremely excited by the opportunity to host TBT at the Al McGuire Center,” Marquette Vice President & Director of Athletics Bill Scholl said. “We are looking forward to our tremendous fans filling up the arena to watch not only our former players compete, but also to support the MACC Fund.”
“I’m very excited about joining TBT,” said Jack Attack (Georgetown Alumni) GM Patrick Ewing Jr. “It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a few years and I’m excited that we’re finally getting it done, especially in a year when TBT is launching the pod format. To be able to compete against teams that were a big part of the Big East makes it that much better.”
The application period for TBT 2018 runs through June 1. Teams compete for spots in the tournament by soliciting support from fans via social, digital and all other forms of media. Applicants must be 18 or older and willing to forego their amateur status. For more information, visit the How It Works page.
Tickets for these games will go on sale to Marquette basketball season ticket members on Friday, May 25 at 10 a.m. CT. Tickets will then go on sale to the general public on Tuesday, May 28 at 10 a.m. CT.
Marquette is offering all session (all three games) or single-day tickets. All tickets are general admission. All session prices are $25 for adults, $7 for children under 12 and $7 for college students. Single-day prices are $15 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and $5 for college students.
