The new staff will be vital for a coaching dipping down into the college ranks for the first time. Let’s take a look at a few names that might surface. Feel free to add any thoughts or options:
Kenny Johnson, Louisville - The top candidate for any coach looking to dip into the DMV recruiting world. Johnson also has been learning under the tutelage of Rick Pitino. Would come with a big price tag (currently makes north of 500K annually)
Mike Pegues, Xavier - DC native. Delaware alum and DeMatha grad. Has served as an assistant at both Xavier and Delaware.
Orlando Antigua - Currently unemployed after being fired by USF. NYC native who spent time as an assistant to John Calipari at both Memphis and Kentucky. Ewing figures to have some juice in NY metro area and Antigua would amplify that.
Chris Caputo, Miami - Longtime Jim Larranaga assistant at George Mason and now Miami. Knows the DMV area well - likely due for his own job soon.
Shammond Williams, Western Kentucky - Former UNC star and now an assistant at Western Kentucky after a stop at Tulane. Former teammate of Ewing’s in Seattle. Godfather of super-recruit Mitchell Robinson. Name already tossed out by Marc Spears.
Dwayne Anderson, Penn St - Villanova alum and Silver Spring, MD native. 4 years on staff Penn State. Recruits the DMV for Nittany Lions.
Tony Skinn, Louisiana Tech - George Mason alum that was part of the Final 4 run. Assistant with Team Takeover before becoming an assistant at LA Tech. Recruited DaQuan Bracey.
Malik Allen, Detriot Pistons - Villanova alum and NJ native. Assistant under Stan Van Gundy in Detroit and played under Ewing in Orlando. Any chance he’d like a return to the Big East?
Dalonte Hill - Carries real baggage after departure from Maryland but not long ago he was the man in DMV recruiting circles. Perhaps he’s ready to step back in to the college game.
Rick Brunson, Minnesota Timberwolves - Former teammate of Ewing’s in NY and coached alongside him in Charlotte. Now in Minnesota with Thibbs as the Van Gundy tree expands it’s footprint. Son plays at Villanova. Could be a great asset as a former point guard.
Russ Springman, San Diego - Native of Silver Spring, MD, his claim to fame was once recruiting Kevin Durant to Texas. Once one of the hottest names in college basketball, why is he now at San Diego as an assistant?
Ed Pinckney, Minnesota Timberwolves - Once Ewing’s Big East rival at Villanova, now another part of the Van Gundy tree going from Mike Malone in Denver to Thibbs in Minnesota. Did coach at Villanova from 2003-2007 under Jay Wright.
Wes Unseld JR, Denver Nuggets - Longtime Wizards assistant before joining Stan Van Gundy in Orlando and now Mike Malone in Denver. Maryland native.
Christian Webster, Virginia Tech - Harvard alum and only 26 years old. Already has moved up from Harvard to Central Florida to Virginia Tech as an assistant. DC native.
Antwon Jackson, Cincinnati - Current assistant at Cincinnati after prior stops at UMass and William & Mary. Formerly an assistant with DC ASsault at the AAU level and at the high school level at Paul VI and Bishop McNamara.
Rasheen Davis, VCU - Bronx, NY native. Current assistant at VCU after prior stops with Xavier and Manhattan. Well regarded in the NY metro area.
Jamill Jones, Central Florida - DC native. All those DMV offers UCF threw out last spring and summer? This guy was the reason. Former VCU and FGCU assistant. Spent 5 years as an assistant with Team Takeover.
Greg Manning, Siena - Jimmy Pastos assistant at Siena and Loyold (MD). Has recruited the Beltway well.
Pat Delany, Charlotte Hornets - No clue if a guy like Delany would want any part of college ball but worked alongside Ewing in Charlotte and was the head coach of Sioux Falls Skyforce in the D-League as a Riley/Van Gundy understudy for years in the Heat organization.
Van Johnson, NIKE regional scout - Kenner League organizer and Nike employee. His contact list is likely massive and could have real pull if he ever dipped into coaching.
Doug Martin, Team Takeover - Once hired by Villanova in 2012 but quickly had to resign due to resume inaccuracies. Still, would carry quite a bit of juice recruiting locally.
Kevin Broadus, Georgetown - Longtime JTIII assistant with a head coaching stint at Binghamton that ended embarrassingly. How handcuffed was he by JTIII indecision or indifference? Who knows.
Anthony Solomon, Georgetown - Former head coach at St. Bonaventure and assistant at Notre Dame. Temporarily landed Tremont Waters. Did not quite get to have the influence in his one season and we expected.
Jon Wallace and Patrick Ewing JR, Georgetown - Doubtful they would be elevated from current position (and one man’s opinion - no way they should be) but can see them being retained in current role, or at least Ewing JR.
Mike Jarvis - Only in a special adviser role to Ewing would this make sense. Ewing’s high school coach who parlayed it into head coaching jobs at Boston U, George Washington and Saint John’s. Could be helpful for a smoother transition into college game.
