Georgetown Head Coach Candidate: Mike Brey

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Second Round-Notre Dame vs West Virginia Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

At this point this is all speculation as I haven’t heard current Notre Dame coach Mike Brey associated with the Georgetown opening. However, the match makes a lot of sense.

- Brey is a native of the DC area and went to high school where he played and eventually coached at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland. He graduated from George Washington.

- Brey was an assistant under Coach K at Duke before getting the head gig at Delaware, where he coached the Blue Hens to 99 wins in 5 years.

- Brey has been with the Fighting Irish a whopping 17 years and has won 20+ games in 13 of those years, making the NCAA Tournament in 12 of them.

- 9 NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 10 years.

- Elite Eight in two consecutive seasons (2014-15 and 2015-16).

- 3 time Big East Coach of the Year (2007, ‘08, ‘11)

- AP Coach of the year in 2011

- In 2016 Brey banked approximately $1.7 million, so he is in the same ballpark that JT3 was in before all the Nike money. In 2012 he signed a 10-year contract with ND. Brey is underpaid given how much he wins, and the bottom line here is that he would be affordable for Georgetown unless he has some monstrous buyout clause which is unlikely.

- Brey’s former top assistant Anthony Solomon is currently on Georgetown’s bench.

Desirability Rating: 8 out of 10.
