Reduced to the role of spoiler, Georgetown plays its final road game of the season tonight at Seton Hall in the dreaded 6:30pm timeslot.
Georgetown did the unthinkable last week in losing back-to-back games to DePaul and St. John’s. Against St. John’s the Hoyas shot better than 50 percent from the field but dug themselves a hole too deep thanks to 22 turnovers.
Coach John Thompson III needs to win his final two games to avoid his worst ever record in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas have gone 7-11 in conference play two previous times since JT3 took over in 2004. The first time was the 2009 team in Greg Monroe’s freshman season and he did it again last season which was clearly his worst season up until possibly now.
Last time out against Seton Hall the Hoyas were unable to contain Angel Delgado who went for 27 points and 16 rebounds. The Pirates, who are still fighting for their NCAA Tournament lives, beat the Hoyas in overtime despite shooting just 36 percent from the field. Desi Rodriguez was just 4 for 19 but hit the game winner in an ugly extra period in which both teams combined for eight total points.
Peak and Pryor led the way for Georgetown back on Jan 31 but they were just a combined 12 for 32 from the field. As a team the Hoyas shot just 5 percent from deep.
Akoy Agau was key the last time these two teams met as the Louisville transfer had 11 rebounds and five blocks. That being said, even though we’re at game 30, maybe Agau will get the start. Last game Kaleb Johnson picked up his first start of the season as JT3 continues to search for something that works. Agau started earlier this year but has been coming off the bench for weeks.
BET Seeding: Georgetown is locked into the 8/9 game next Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. Another Hoyas loss or a St. John’s win locks the Hoyas into ninth place.
NCAA: Hoyas must cut down the nets at the BIG EAST Tournament next week in order to get into the Field of 68.
NIT or at least a .500 final record: Georgetown must win its final two games to clinch a non-losing season. The NIT is still in play with a losing record but seems doubtful.
Reason to be cynical: Seton Hall has everything to play for tonight. Georgetown looked disinterested in the start of their last game and twice this season opposing players have called the team lazy.
Reason to be delusional: KenPom still thinks they Hoyas will win another game this season. If that’s the case, this would be the best bet.
Prediction: Seton Hall 80, Georgetown 73
