Kenner League Recap: July 31, 2016

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Reggie Cameron: 13 pts, 3-3 2 pt, 1-2 ft, 2-6 3pt, 4 reb (2 off), 1 TO

-Tried to drive baseline on Marcus Ginyard, could not get anywhere, stepped out of bounds

-Hit a nice leaning floater from about 6 feet

Trey Mourning: 4 its, 2-5 2pt, 0-1 3pt, 3 feb (1 off), 3 asst, 2 TO

-good low post bounce pass to reggie cutting to the basket

-strayed way too far of Tyler Cavanaugh on a "pick and pop", leaving him wide open for a 3 that he hit

-could not handle cavanaugh at all. Inside, Cavanaugh’s combo of skill and strength overpowered trey. Outside - if Trey got close enough to contest jumpers, Cavanaugh was able to blow by him pretty easily.

-Pushed a defensive board up court aggressively, resulting in a layup for a teammate

-Had a nice post up move on Paul White - reverse pivot with a left hand finish at the rim

-nice wraparound pass to a teammate cutting to the basket - who fumbled the accurate pass out of bounds

-Perfect touch pass leading to a wide open dunk

-Good bounce pass from the post to an open cutter in the lane - cutter missed open dunk

-Sat for the last 12 minutes or so of a game that got out of hand early in the second half

Paul White: 2 pts, 1-1 2pt, 3 reb (1 off), 1 asst

-Played only about 14 minutes. Sat the last 14 minutes or so after he appeared to hurt the outside portion of his hip/thigh. Was walking around a bit gingerly after the game, did not seem seriously hurt, but hard to know for sure the severity of the injury

-good transition pass to start a break, resulting in a wide open 3 at the other end

-had a real good offense board. Came flying in from out of his area, followed up board with a layup. Very strong, athletic move

Jonathon Mulmore: 21 its, 0-5 2pt, 6-6 ft, 5-7 3pt, 3 feb, 2 asst, 1 st, 1 bl, 3 TO

-sloppy in the first half - missed 4 layups, had a few bad turnovers. On the layups - he made good moves to get to the rim, but did not finish. 2 of these layups were easy, 2 were tough/contested.

-shot very well from 3. Hit a pull up 3 early. Then hit four 3’s when his defender sagged off him in the second half (most from NBA distance). Did try one 27 foot heat check that was an awful shot - airball

-Set a nice screen in the lane to free a cutter. Cutter got open, caught pass, hit layup

-had a nice "pick and pop" pass to copeland, who hit the wide open 3

-defended Alani Moore, a short/quick DC area point guard who will be a frosh at Temple. Moore is quick, but Mulmore did a good job keeping him from doing much damage off the dribble

-After a rough first half, Mulmore kind of took over the game in the final 10 minutes. This is when he hit a bunch of the threes, leading a comeback. His team was down 48-40 with about 10 minutes left. They then went on a 26-7 run to win by 11

Isaac Copeland: 21 pts, 6-15 2pt, 6-8 ft, 1-2 3pt, 9 reb (5 off), 2 bl, 2 TO

-Good baseline cut and finish under the rim

-hit two baseline 13 footers on baseline inbounds passes - quick release as soon as he caught pass

-looking to take off running with D boards at every opportunity. It will be fun to see Copeland play with Pryor/peak/mulmore/mosely/Derrickson - an entire group of guys looking to constantly push the tempo and get into the open court. Isaac is so much more dangerous in the open court then when he has to try to handle the ball in traffic

-worst play: Stripped badly when trying to take his man off the dribble

-Settled for too many pull up jumpers. He really needs to work on being more disciplined with this point. He will have too many other good weapons around him this year, they will be able to get better shots than his pull up contested 18 footers.

-Had a spectacular dunk - came flying in from the foul line area to slam home a missed shot

-Did a good job today drawing contact when going to the basket off the dribble in the half court game

Tre Campbell: 17 pts, 7-9 2pt, 0-1 ft, 1-6 3pt, 4 reb (1 off), 3 asst, 2 st, 2 TO

-on the first possession - took Mosely off the dribble and exploded to the hoop for a layup

-threw a good PnR bounce pass to the roll man. Threw another similar pass later in game. Definitely showing some improvement with his PnR passing and his general PG-style passing game. But still takes a few bad, out of offensive rhythm pull up 3s each game. Not blindly attacking the lane as much - progress is being made, but still a long way to go in developing Tre as a PG.

-very quick attacking of the dribble, and finished well at the rim early in the game. Struggled more with finishing in the second half

-Best play: ball fake from the corner, baseline drive for a basket

-played very hard all game, even when they were way behind late

Kaleb Johnson: 9 pts, 2-9 2pt, 2-3 ft, 1-2 3pt, 3 reb (3 off), 2 st, 5 TO

-struggled to do anything when covered by mosely, who was his main defender for much of the game. Most of his scoring came from taking the ball to the basket in transition

-Had a real nice +1 finish through a Derrickson hard foul

George Muresan: 2 pts, 1-1 2pt, 0-1 3pt, 2 reb, 1 st, 2 TO

-did not play much, but nice to see him suited up for the first time this summer (not sure if he played friday night)

-real skinny

-had a nice transition pass

-knows how to play - gets to good spots on the floor, makes good passes. But not strong/athletic enough to do much on either end, even though he gets to the right spots.

Marcus Derrickson: 16 pts, 6-9 2pt, 1-1 ft, 1-3 3pt, 8 reb (1 off), 3 TO

-Hit a 3 off the dribble in which he made a jab step forward, then bounced back behind the 3 point line. The kind of move guards usually make, very nimble maneuver for a guy Marcus’ size

-Good post move - reverse pivot in lane, lefty finish

-took his man off the dribble with a really subtle head fake/hesitation move

-fouled a lot playing post defense - probably 5 or 6 fouls. Fouling would probably be a problem if he played the 5 for long stretches against decent post up offensive 5’s

Jagan Mosely: 24 pts, 7-10 2pt, 4-8 ft, 2-4 3pt, 4 reb (1 off), 6 asst, 1 TO

-best game of the summer - he was great today

-very aggressive attacking the basket all game. Today he finished almost everything, often through contact. Had at 3 or 4 +1 baskets. He has struggled to finish at times this summer, but he was excellent finishing his drives through traffic/contact today

-Pump fake and baseline drive/finish from the corner

-Made a good cut down center of lane, reached back on the move to catch an errant pass, still finished strong.

-Shot poorly from the foul line today, but his stroke is sound. Just a bad day at the line

-split defenders on a Pick and Roll, finished through a defender at the rim - in the final seconds of the first half.

-Always looking for Pryor streaking down the court when he gets a defensive board. Throw a few long passes that lead to easy hoops every game. He and Pryor play together very well. Mulmore is a very talented guy, but it is going to be hard to keep Jagan on the bench. He is going to force his way into minutes at PG, and probably some at the 2 as well. he is going to be a very, very good player over the course of his 4 years. He might even be a great player by the end of his hoya career, if he continues to improve as much as he has over the past few years.

Rodney Pryor: 32 pts, 7-9 2pt, 6-6 ft, 4-7 3pt, 1 reb (1 off), 5 asst, 4 st, 1 bl, 3 TO

-this guy is just having a ridiculous summer. I have been going to Kenner games regularly for about 10 years, and nobody has had a summer like this for the hoyas before. Peak had two great scoring summers, but not the complete dominance of every aspect of the game the way pryor is doing. Otto was great the summer before his sophomore year, but he was not scoring anything like Pryor is. Roy had some great summers, but again nothing like what Pryor is doing. I know this is overly positive hyperbole - but what pryor is doing every game looks a lot like that highlight tape of Iverson’s first kenner league game.

-He is making highlight plays by the bunches, on both ends of the court. Dunks, spectacular finishes through contact, steals, rundown blocks from behind, lob passes from all over the court, diving all over the floor, hitting contested jumpers. There really is nothing that Pryor is not doing in every single game this summer

-He finishes through contact incredibly well. Every time he attacks the basket in transition against one defender, you know he is going to score and/or get fouled - often both.

-Threw a lob to Mosely on the break for a dunk, then again to Harvey Thomas (former Hoya in 2001-2) shortly thereafter

-Never looks even remotely winded - despite playing like the Tasmanian Devil for every minute he is on the court.

-I do get overly enthused at times, so take the raves with a grain of salt. But if you have not been able to get to any Kenner games this summer - just talk to anyone who has seen him play, the guy has been truly great this summer.

-he does foul a bit more than ideal, in part because he is going so hard all the time. He challenges everything on D. Probably had 3 or 4 fouls today.

Bradley Hayes: 20 pts, 8-15 2pt, 4-5 ft, 8 reb (4 off), 1 bl, 1 TO

-his second half was his best stretch of play this summer

-early in he struggled to hit his go-to hook shots over Jesse

-had a nice catch of a tough pass inside - finish +1

-hit a 16 foot baseline jumper

-Grabbed an offensive board and finished strong through good challenge by Jesse

-dunk off a pick and roll to tie the game in the final minute

-forced a tough layup attempt by Peak with the game tied in the final 25 seconds - forced LJ to miss

-in the second half: when Jesse had to provide help D on a driving player, hayes did an excellent job of going to the rim. he had a couple of offensive rebound dunks/tips on this move, as Jesse was occupied with the guard shooting, leaving Hayes wide open for the rebound follow shots

LJ Peak: 22 pts, 5-9 2pt, 3-4 ft, 3-5 3pt, 3 reb, 3 asst, 1 st, 3 bl, 2 TO

-i usually don’t write too much about LJ because his games are similar most of the time: attacks the rim well, draws fouls, hits a few jumpers, solid all around performance

-had a flashy dunk when he flew in for a one handed slam of an offensive board

-hit two tough left hand finishes through the defender in transition

-Hit a tough fadeaway 11 footer over Govan

-hit a corner three to put Clydes up 4 with 20 seconds left - a classic dagger shot

Jessie Govan: 15 its, 8-15 2pt, 4-6 ft, 1-1 3pt, 5 feb (1 off), 3 bl, 3 TO

-ran the court and had a nice finish - catching pass while running down the lane at full speed

-got stripped in the post by a help defender. Did not see/feel the help defender at all.

This still happens once or twice a game

-Hit a super tough baseline 10 foot jumper off the dribble- spinning left, falling out of bounds.

-when a smaller man switched onto him on a "pick and pop": jesse immediately and aggressively backed his man down from about 17 feet out, moving smoothly into a 6 foot right hand hook in the lane. Very powerful, athletic move.

-Good bounce pass through some traffic to a baseline cutter - resulting in a dunk

-played good D at the rim to force a miss on a game winning layup attempt with the game tied in the closing seconds. stayed vertical, did not jump into shooter or swipe at the ball.

Other Notes:

-DSR and Greg Whittington played for Clyde’s today

-Jon Wallace was again in the gym, but did not play

-Gene Smith also in attendance. He looks great, like he could step right on the court and harass Jim Masters into a meltdown all over again!

-Akoy Agau did not play today, and I did not see him in the gym

Stay Casual, my friends.
