Hoyas Tour Continues in Pisa as Team Visits Leaning Tower

Florence, Italy - After an impressive win on Tuesday night in Rome, the Georgetown University men's basketball team and its travel party departed early on Wednesday morning from the city to continue the 10-day tour of Italy.

Buses departed Rome just after 7 a.m. and, after a couple of stops along the way on Italian highways, the team arrived in Pisa where they were to visit the famed Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the freestanding bell tower of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa, known worldwide for its unintended tilt.

It is situated behind the Cathedral and is the third-oldest structure in Pisa's Cathedral Square, the Piazza del Duomo, after the Cathedral and the Baptistry.

The group was met by a tour guide, who explained that the tilt began during construction, caused by the soft soil in the foundation.  The tilt increased over the decades before the structure was completed and continued until it was stabilized in the late 20th century.

The tower has 294 steps and the team was able to climb them all the way to the top, where they were able to see the breath-taking view of the city.

The tour continues on Thursday morning when the team will visit key historic sites in the city of Florence, considered the birthplace of the Renaissance.

Georgetown plays next on Thursday, Aug. 20 against BC Atletas (Lithuania) in Florence, Italy. The tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. local time (12:30 p.m. ET).
