Anton Gill Close to Committing to Georgetown

Casual sources and @Hoyas247 indicate that Louisville transfer guard Anton Gill is close to committing to Georgetown, with a formal commitment possible as soon as tonight.  Gill visited Georgetown over the weekend and word is that he impressed the coaching staff both on and off the court.

Should he commit to the Hoyas, Gill would join forward Akoy Agau as former Cardinals to head to the Hilltop.  Indeed, Agau seemed excited about Gill's visit, tweeting the below during the wee hours:

Gill came out of high school with a reputation as a big-time scorer. Gill racked up buckets, first at Ravenscroft (N.C.), where he was the teammate of a young Isaac Copeland, and then at Hargrave Military Academy (per his Louisville bio), where he averaged 28 points per contest and went for 50-plus in consecutive weeks. He finished his high school career as the 48th-best prospect in the class of 2013 (per ESPN).  Gill was both a an athlete and a shooter, as shown in this highlight reel.

But promise so far hasn't translated to college production. Gill spent two seasons at Louisville, where he never really shined or had the chance to do so. This past season, he averaged under 10 minutes and just 2.5 points per game, connecting on one out of every four three-pointers. He had a moment here and there, most recently scoring three buckets in two-plus minutes in the Louisville's Sweet Sixteen win over N.C. State. Still, Gill undoubtedly was looking for a bigger role than he was getting with the Cardinals, but couldn't consistently crack a Louisville rotation that was starved for scoring. With Rick Pitino actively courting transfer guards, Gill sought to play his remaining two seasons elsewhere.

The playing time Gill seeks may be available at Georgetown. He will become eligible for the 2016-17 season, when the Hoyas currently have just Tre Campbell and LJ Peak as scholarship guards (and Peak as much a wing as a guard). Gill potentially could help pick up the scoring slack left by the departure of D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, who will exhaust his eligibility after this coming season. Possibly adding to the allure of the Hilltop is the presence of Copeland and of fellow Louisville transfer Akoy Agau, who likewise didn't see the court much as a Cardinal but who, from all the chatter, has been tearing it up in Georgetown practices.

The question is whether Gill's potential was simply untapped at Louisville, or whether his prolific high school scoring just won't translate to the college level. Does he just need a year in the gym to rebuild his confidence before tearing it up as a fourth-year junior?

Georgetown's interest in Gill, Washington transfer Nigel Williams-Goss, and former VCU commit Kenny Williams (Class of '15), makes for an interesting if complicated analysis. Is it important to get a guard who is eligible next season (Williams), when the Hoyas could be a reserve guard away from making serious noise? Is it more important to get the best guard, even if he has to sit out next season? Do the Hoyas need a lead guard or an off-guard? Will Georgetown have one available scholarship for the season to come, or will another slot come open because of an outgoing transfer?

Should Gill commit to the Hoyas, even though he would have to sit out next season he would still utilize Georgetown's final open scholarship for 2015-16.  Here is the current scholarship situation.
