Your Fighting Hoyas of Georgetown face the Creighton Bluejays in a do or die Tuesday night affair on Senior Night and as usual we here at THE GLOBAL PHENOMENON are bringing you everything you need to know about Georgetown's next opponent. Here to dish on all things Bluejays is the White and Blue Review, your trusted source for Creighton hoops on the internet. Let's do this!
Barring wins against Creighton and Villanova and perhaps a run in the Big East Tournament, it's likely the Hoyas will be on the outside looking in come Selection Sunday. Do you feel bad for us?
It would be a bit of a suprise to see that happen and something I didn't expect would be the case at the beginning of the season. I actually picked Georgetown to win the league this year. When I think of the Big East, I think of Georgetown. I guess I expected enough coming back would be enough to carry the torch in the league reconfiguration, but with Greg Whittington going down and subsequently leaving, Joshua Smith not making the grades to stay eligible and other little things affecting the program, they just have not been able to get over the hump. So not necessarily feeling bad, but just a little disappointed.
(Casual Note: Thanks, jerk!)
The Jays have stumbled a bit of late and it appears 'road games' might be its Kryptonite. What have you noticed about how this team plays differently away from Omaha?
The key for the Bluejays in the road games this season is getting off to a hot start and Doug McDermott contributing to that hot start. During the first half of conference season, Creighton was able to get going early which helped them to great success. However, the second half has been found to be much more difficult for them to get off to a quick start and it was apparent in the Xavier game the other night. Shooting well from three on the road is extremely important as well.
The Hoyas managed to contain Doug McDermott during our first matchup. Anything in particular you noticed the Hoyas did or was it just an off game?
The first matchup was a bit of a blur for me since I didn't get to the game until partway through the first half. However, they did hold McDermott to his second lowest scoring output this season. The Hoyas did work very hard to have anyone but Doug hurt them that night. Fortunately they had enough to win that game. However, I think the Hoyas will see a different McDermott on Tuesday night.
Speaking of Doug, give me a guy in the NBA who you think his game is a fair comparison to.
I apologize, but I don't watch a whole lot of the NBA so it is hard to make a comparison to, I think Doug is a unique player and he doesn't really fit into any players that I am aware of.
I got these questions a bit late to you as it's Mardi Gras down here in New Orleans and I've been a bit, um, preoccupied. What's the most fun time of the year in Omaha?
Probably, the most fun time I enjoy is in June during the College World Series. A lot of out of town people come up for the games and you get some of the most diehard fans in college sports (outside of the Creighton diehards of course.) A lot of tailgating goes on and you get to meet a lot of great people.
You excited for the Big East Tournament? Do you know a bunch of Omahanians making the trip to NYC?
This is going to be a great Big East Tournament. Even though I am not going, a lot of Creighton fans are making the trip, including several of the White & Blue Review crew. If I remember correctly, Creighton sold over 2500 tickets for the Big East tournament in their sales and most of the Creighton fans I know are making the trip expecting to never see a Creighton team like this for a while.
What seed do you think Creighton deserves in the Dance? How far do the Jays have to go for you to deem this season a success?
I would be satisfied with Creighton getting a 3 seed for the NCAA Tournament. Many think they could be a 2-seed, but I think they would have had to win out to get that. After the loss to Xavier the other night and the potential for another loss before the NCAA's, I really think a 3-seed would be a great spot to be in and be the highest seed earned ever for the NCAA Tournament.
As for the season success. I think the team has to get to at least the Sweet 16 or better. This team is better than any of the others since I have been alive and it is the time to take the program to the next level.
In your opinion, what was the Best Movie of the Year and why?
As a dad with small kids I don't see that many movies, so my movie of the year is The Lego Movie. Everything was awesome in that one.
Final score prediction?
Creighton will bounce back after the game on Saturday against Xavier. After Isaiah Zierden went down in the Xavier game and likely out for the season, they will be on an emotional high to try and win a game for him, just like how the team went on a run when Grant Gibbs was out for almost a month. The Bluejays will escape with a 67-62 victory.
