Your fighting Georgetown Hoyas are headed to the Elite 8. Georgetown's men's soccer defeated Syracuse 2-1 at Shaw Field Sunday and advances to play the winner of Notre Dame and UVA. That game is at 7 PM ET Sunday in South Bend.
After a scoreless 1st half, the Orange took a 1-0 lead after a short corner took the Hoyas by surprise and Julian Buescher was able to knock one past Tomas Gomez. Syracuse largely controlled the run of play from that point and the Hoyas struggled to create chances, but they were able to earn a corner in the 80th minute that Keegan Rosenberry buried with a fantastic header from the back post.
Tied at one, the game headed to OT and Syracuse threatened just seconds into the period but Tomas Gomez was able to gain control and hold off a nervous moment in the box. In the 94th minute, the Hoyas earned another corner, their 9th of the game. Senior Tyler Rudy sent a kick into the box at the near post that looked for a moment to be too close to the goal, but senior Jared Rist was able to head it home and the Hoyas advanced in their second straight overtime thriller (and their second straight thriller over Syracuse as the two teams played to PKs in the Sweet 16 two years ago).
Here is a video of the goal and some great photos from Georgetown Athletics.
