Casual Links: Syracuse at Georgetown on ESPN GameDay Reaction, Otto Porter Draft Stock Rising

There are just 212 days until Syracuse visits the Verizon Center to take on our beloved Georgetown fighting Hoyas in what will be the final chapter in the Big East rivalry for both teams.

Casual_links3_medium

Georgetown-Syracuse should be a quite a show | WashingtonExaminer.com
The end of the Big East as we know it will be televised. For the first time, ESPN's College GameDay will descend upon Verizon Center for the regular-season finale between Georgetown and Syracuse on March 9.

ESPN Stocks rising and falling this summer (Insider nonsense)
Porter began to catch scouts' eyes at the Maui Classic last year and this summer, at the LeBron camp, he took things to the next level. While he doesn't have any one thing to really hang his hat on as a prospect, he is good at just about everything, has great size for his position and has a tireless work ethic on the court. Virtually every scout I spoke with said they believe Porter could be a lottery pick in the 2013 draft.

We don't think we need to tell you that the pending dissolution of the annual Georgetown-Syracuse Big East matchup is an abomination in the sight of the Lord.

Syracuse will play at Georgetown on March 9 as part of ESPN's GameDay | syracuse.com
The excitement surrounding the Syracuse-Georgetown game on March 9 should be enormous. The game falls on the final weekend of the regular season.

The reaction to the Syracuse-Georgetown game from the asswads over at Nunes after The Jump:

As you can see in the below, the Evil Cusians are already getting all hot and bothered., and of course, whining in a manner that would make Jim Boeheim proud. Below are the comments from Orange folk after the ESPN GameDay announcement yesterday:

Kill 'em again!

Whip G’town’s ass one more time before we make our exit, Orange!

Dedicated Syracuse Orange, New York Yankees, New York Jets, New York Knicks and New York Rangers fan. Riding and dying with 'em.

I rallied the troops on my end

Should have a 5-7 man Cuse contingent to roll deep at this game. this shot to #1 on the list for our Cuse away game. My greatest hope after a Cuse win is that I will once again drunkenly stumble upon Hoya Suxa for slurred convos and much high fiving.

Now that we are both on the Twitterz

Im sure coordinating it this time is now a possibility. The big question mark is the BS-ery that was ticket sales two years ago.

depending on Syracuse’s willingness to schedule the Hoyas after the Orange complete their move to the ACC next season.

Pretty sure that’s backwards.

by cuse2012 on Aug 8, 2012 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

That's what I thought

But it is another anti-Syracuse story line for the future. If they don’t play again it certainly is because of Syracuse. Couldn’t be a bunch of petulant non-football teams who first claim they don’t need Syracuse and Pitt and then say both schools brought the conference down by defecting.

by orangetundra on Aug 8, 2012 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of all

It’s just strange that the narrative is being shifted here, when all the other realignment-rivalry issues are being reported accurately. They talk about Pitt being bitter, Kansas being bitter and Texas A&M, too, and that’s why the games aren’t being scheduled. And it’s accurate. But for some reason, they’re just plain lying here. We’re not the scorned party, or the ones that needed to climb out of someone else’s shadow (in A&M’s case). No reason for us to be opposed.

I think it can be summed up

as ESPN reporting whatever ESPN wants as long as it fits their narrative. Another in a long list of reasons I never visit ESPN.com for anything, or watch unless there is a Cuse game on.

I might just join the boycott.

Yahoo/CBS/Fox all respectively are getting better at certain things. ESPN isn’t as much as a necessary evil anymore.

Well the ACC deal with the network

Won’t help any of us much in that boycott. We’d have to miss far too many games, unfortunately (especially those of us outside of the northeast).

I thought it was great.....

It’s different down here….

How many stadiums north of the Mason Dixon fill 90,000 plus seat stadiums every Saturday?

How many Saturday fall weddings have you been to in the north? I was at one for the famous WVU/SU game. That doesn’t happen in the south; you’re not allowed to get married on a Saturday in the fall unless it’s you, your mom and your future wife and mother in law as the only guests.

How many families don’t speak to one another because one person likes Rutgirls and one likes Cuse? Auburn/Alabama that happens….

How many people up there are so mentally ill with football that they kill trees over their hatred? Or put their junk on another man’s face and record it for the world to see?

Okay, that last pair wasn’t a good one, other than to show how different it is….

And maybe the truth hurts? The SEC has won how many in a row now, and really there hasn’t been much of a question that they were the best?

I stopped questioning Boeheim's basketball decisions on April 7th, 2003.

I'm with ex-townie on this one

I thought it was an excellent piece of writing that was pretty honest in explaining how college football integrates deeply into the fabric of the South. You don’t have to agree with their obsession or feelings of superiority (it’s a bit unhealthy, imo), but no one can tell me there is a more competitive, successful and tradition-rich conference in all of American sport.

by The Invisible Swordsman on Aug 8, 2012 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not what we're debating

I’m fine with the south’s obsession with football and try to share it in wherever possible. In talking with several SEC folks today, they all take exception to the piece because it paints itself as some overly-contrarian guide to "why us southerners are just the way we are." In no way am I arguing with the sentiment. Just disagreeing with the way it’s delivered.

And for the record, ex-Townie, there are plenty of stadiums that hold 90K+ north of the Mason-Dixon line. They’re all in B1G country, however.

We all get something different out of the piece....

I don’t feel that they’re rubbing people’s faces in it, and most of the comments on that board are from SEC fans and none of them have said a bad word about it….

The top three attendance records are all B1G, but 6 of the next 7 are all SEC with the one non-SEC team being Texas. That’s half their (pre-Mizzou/A&M) conference…..

I am sure you’ve been to an SEC game, John. You cannot possibly say that the tailgating, the overall party, the fans, the quality of football, etc. just aren’t more religious about their football than the north….

Off topic, but – if you ever want to see the most beautiful coeds, go to an Ole Miss game sometime….

I stopped questioning Boeheim's basketball decisions on April 7th, 2003.

by ex-Townie on Aug 8, 2012 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I cannot say those things

Because I don’t believe them. Again, wasn’t arguing the overall statement that southern football is better. i agree with that statement whole-heartedly.

Also can’t really use the comments on that piece for anything. The ESPN comment boards are the type of internet black hole only Yahoo News can rival. Reading level’s probably around fifth or sixth grade for about 90 percent of the people there.

What SEC fans I’ve spoken to take issue with is that the author uses his microcosm of an existence to blanket-statement all southern football and southern football fans. He’s too matter-of-fact and it paints the SEC as some sort of gated d-bag club, when it’s actually a pretty open group (unlike the B1G) that welcomes people with fairly open arms.

If you have digital cable and get all of the individual league networks

Watching ESPN really is pointless. You can avoid all the Lin/Tebow/Favre garbage and it actually covers everyone, not just the Northeast teams (every team I root for is in the Northeast and it even pisses me off).

The only thing good about ESPN was Baseball Tonight, and even though it still is good, Quick Pitch on MLB Network is even better.

Cablevision still has to be d-bags (the Dolans are d-bags…go figure!) and hold out on adding NFL Network, but every NFL related show on ESPN makes my head explode except for that show they have on at like 3 AM where they really break down tape without any TMZ crap to it. But that’s on at like 3 AM. And I actually can’t even remember what the name of it is or if they still have it, I’m sure it wasn’t dumbed down enough so the execs in Bristol had to make a change.

ESPN doesn’t cover hockey anyway because they’re assholes, so NHLN and NBCS are better for that. And I LOVE how NBC added college hockey.

I really don’t care too much for the NBA, but if I do want stuff on it, watching Wilbon race bait for an hour isn’t exactly my cup of tea. NBATV does have some interesting things on from time to time.

College sports are meh. CBSSN does an ok job with football (beats the shit out of Mark May, I suppose). I’ll watch anything with Bilas on it, but without him I’ll get my bball stuff from the interwebs.

Golf Channel is awesome, a lot of good stuff to watch if you’re trying to get better at golf and it’s great at showing you everything that happened at any given tournament. Same with the Tennis Channel.

There are 800 regional sports networks in the area.

Of course, live sports is where you’re really screwed, especially when it comes to being a fan of an ACC team.
