The Morning After: Schedule Tough Opponents to Learn from Tough Games

The Hoyas might have a bit more upside than the Owls, but everyone expected a close game and both teams are considered dangerous possibilities to do some damage in March.  Apparently the Temple students weren’t hearing it.  Acting like they’d just beaten Big John, Pat Ewing and Reggie Williams at the height of Hoya Paranoia, the Owl fans spilled out of the student section when Austin Freeman’s 50-foot shot went 60 feet, covering the Liacouras floor with what we believe to be the season’s first RTC within seconds.

"I thought we had them in scramble mode, thought we had some openings," John Thompson said. "You come down to the end like that, you have to trust each other. Was that the shot that we wanted to get? No. But that's where we ended up."

Georgetown is now 3-15 all-time against Temple in Philadelphia. This was also coach Fran Dunphy's 400th career win. Next up for Temple is Akron on Sunday.

This isn't a bad loss, seeing as Temple is a very tough out at home, so Georgetown shouldn't get too upset. However, it is still a loss to an unranked team, so it stings.

Temple is one of five Georgetown nonconference opponents picked to win its conference -- or a division within its conference -- this season. Each of the previous two Decembers, Temple's basketball team had knocked off a previously unbeaten Top 10 team at the Liacouras Center. In 2008, it was eighth-ranked Tennessee that came to North Philly and lost by 16 points. And a year ago it was No. 3 Villanova that went down, this time by 10. It had become sort of an early holiday present. And it's the kind of gift that can keep on giving, all the way to Selection Sunday. Last night, it was unbeaten, No. 9 Georgetown's turn to get into the spirit.

Daniel Ochefu, a junior center at the Westtown School, attended the game. The 6-9, 225-pounder is regarded by ESPN as the nation's 12th-best college prospect in the Class of 2012. Ochefu has scholarship offers from Temple, Georgetown, West Virginia, James Madison, and Rutgers.
