For the second straight year, Georgetown is opening the season at #21 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Personally, I think this is an accurate ranking at this point in the season given the uncertainty about Georgetown's guard-oriented offense this year. There is, however, a lot of room to move up in the rankings as the Hoyas have a tough out-of-conference schedule in November and December. They play three Top 25 teams on the road before the conference season begins (counting Missouri in Kansas City as road game) in addition to Utah St at home and a potential matchup against NC State.
The poll includes three other Big East teams (Pittsburgh #4, Villanova #6, Syracuse #13) and West Virginia is one of the first out. The Big 10 and Big 12 lead all conferences with five teams a piece. SI recently ranked the Big East as the third best conference in the country.
This year Georgetown is trying to buck a three year trend of finishing lower in the end-of-season polls than in the beginning ones. Let the games begin.
