Hoyas to Take On Shanxi Brave Dragons in Beijing Tomorrow at 7am EST

Cimg0284_medium
Casual Olympic Village from Secret Casual Spy

The Hoyas play their first exhibition game of the season tomorrow in Beijing against the vaunted Shanxi Brave Dragons.  The game is really a tune-up for a much more difficult match against the Bayi Rockets on Thursday.  Not much else to report from China, other than Markel Starks having fun with his video camera.

Hopefully Georgetown puts up a better international showing than Villanova has this summer.  The Wildcats have lost to Senegal (twice), The Netherlands, and Georgia (country, not school).  They did, however, defeat Israel by two whole points.  Syracuse was unable to take part in any international travel because they are not allowed to leave the state of New York until January.

Rock Chalk Aloha! Georgetown To Face Kansas In First Round Of the 2011 Maui Invitational

Kansas. Awesome. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

The 2011 Maui Invitational will unveil its brackets today, and according to Gary Parrish your Georgetown Hoyas are set to take on the Kansas Jayhawks on November 21st.

The Tournament is one of the toughest early season events in the country, with a field that includes Duke facing Tennessee, Memphis against Michigan, and UCLA facing host Chaminade, among others.  For those interesting in making the short trip to Maui for the games, Georgetown has arranged travel packages.

The inevitable "Georgetown Gets Lei'd" headline will be saved until November.

Support Our Troops: Hoyas to Play Chinese Army Team at Beijing Olympic Sports Center

These people would look a lot more casual in Blue and Gray. (Photo by Lintao Zhang/Getty Images)

Georgetown has announced today that the men's basketball team will be taking on the Bayi Rockets on August 18th.  Exciting, I know.  But wait, there is more!  The Bayi Rockets is not only the most storied franchise in the Chinese Basketball Association, its players are also part of the People's Liberation Army.  That's right sports nuts, our beloved Hoyas will be taking on select members of the world's largest military force.  And the team is really, really tall, boasting six players 6'10'' or taller.

To say this goes beyond basketball is an understatement.  This is a clash of political ideologies, global policies and dinner utensils.  This is our generation's Miracle on Ice and Rocky IV.

For more information on the Bayi Rockets, check out their official site, and but first learn Chinese.

The Georgetown Hoyas will play the Alabama Crimson Tide on December 1st in the 2011 BIG EAST/SEC Challenge.  The game will take place at Alabama, and is a rematch of Georgetown's only appearance in the competition to date when the Hoyas defeated Alabama by a score of 70-60 in Birmingham in 2007.

George Washington Wants To Play Georgetown

First it was Maryland AD Kevin Anderson clamoring for a piece of Hoyas action, and now, incoming George Washington AD Patrick Nero wants the Hoyas to face off against our friendly yet not as intelligent neighbor in Foggy Bottom.

According to the DC Sports Bog, GW would like Georgetown to get involved in the BB&T Classic Basketball Tournament so that DC could have its own version of the "Big 5"" in Philadelphia.

"Georgetown is a terrific university and a great basketball program," Nero said. "We would love for them to play us. We would love to play them. And hopefully we can convince them that they would get a lot out of playing GW. The BB&T certainly has a reputation as a great basketball tournament. We're committed to playing in it every year. I think it would be great for college basketball in this area if every local team committed to playing that tournament, but we can only control GW."

Frankly, I think he's right.  The Maryland issue is one thing, but Georgetown-George Washington relations don't have a similar strained history and at minimum a local rivalry for DC supremacy would be beneficial to all fans of local college hoops.  With relatively new Athletic Directors at all three schools and Gary Williams now enjoying boat drinks on a beach somewhere, hopefully Georgetown, Maryland, and GW can get together and make this a reality. Sprinkle in a drop of George Mason and a dollop of VCU, and all of a sudden you've got a local tournament that would rival any other.
