Robert Upshaw To Pick Kansas State Over Georgetown, Louisville, and Fresno State

Who could pass up an opportunity to become the next Henry Sims?!?!

Though the official announcement isn't until 5pm, according to Coast to Coast Recruiting Robert Upshaw, a 7-foot center prospect from California, will choose Kansas State over Georgetown, Louisville, and his hometown school Fresno State. Upshaw, considered a raw and still growing prospect with the chance to blossom into a powerful big man, was ranked 49th by ESPN and the 10th best center recruit in the 2012 class.

The commitment of Upshaw would have fortified a thinning front line for the Hoyas, but alas Upshaw chose not to become the latest 7-footer to attend Big Man U and instead will enjoy his college years in scenic Manhattan, Kansas.  It's unclear how Upshaw was unswayed by the Georgetown staff's water into wine performance on Saturday afternoon when Henry Sims notched 19 points, 6 boards, 5 assists, and three blocks.

Though the 2012 class remains solid after the earlier acceptance of D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, the Hoyas have had recent near-misses with Kyle AndersonT.J. Warren and now Upshaw.

2012 Big Man Robert Upshaw to Announce Decision Today

Consensus Top 50 center Robert Upshaw is set to announce his college decision later today, according to CBS Sports.  The 7-foot big man is currently deciding between Georgetown, Louisville, Fresno State, and Kansas State.  There has been very little information from the Upshaw camp since his visit to Georgetown on October 28th.  Below are a few tidbits surrounding his decision:

  • Georgetown - Upshaw has repeatedly said he is interested in a school with good academics
  • Fresno State - Upshaw's local team; has stated he wants to see how they do this year
  • Louisville - Unclear whether they will have enough scholarships available in 2012; they currently have no scholarship seniors and already have one signed player in 2012 without room on the roster.  But as UConn showed us this fall - roster limits are meaningless
  • Kansas State - Just signed Laimonas Chatkevicius, a 6'10''  big man in same class as Upshaw.  Regardless, rumors floating around that KSU is the team to beat in this race
As with all things surrounding recruiting: that which seems logical need not occur.  Happy Monday, Georgetown is undefeated.

T.J. Warren Commits to N.C. State Over Georgetown

According to multiple sources, family ties have won out today as T.J. Warren, a 6'7'' forward from Raleigh, North Carolina, has committed to attend North Carolina State over Georgetown University.  A consensus Top 25 player in the Class of 2012, Warren chose his home-state school where his father played in the 70's.  John Thompson III and his supporting cast again clawed their way into the final pairing despite being a considerable underdog.

Warren has all the makings of a JT3 type of player, with a refined offensive game that includes impressive ball handling and perimeter skills for his size.  Though he won't bolster Georgetown's stable of tall and talented small forwards which already includes Otto Porter, Greg Whittington and perhaps Hollis Thompson next season, his decision could leave JT3 to go after a more pressing need: a big man.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera Commits to Georgetown over Louisville, UCLA, NC State, and Memphis

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, a 6'3 combo guard originally from Indianapolis, IN has committed to Georgetown. The consensus top 50 guard is completing his high school ball at Oak Hill Academy in VA and has been John Thompson III's top target in the Class of 2012 since it became increasingly clear Kyle Anderson would look elsewhere.

Smith-Rivera, or "DSR," was committed to Xavier at the end of last year and while Georgetown was seen as a frontrunner after he decommitted, there had been a surge of interest for the high scoring guard from the likes of Louisville, UCLA, NC State and Memphis.  Though his official announcement came today, it became apparent that Georgetown had surged to the top of DSR's list after he canceled scheduled visits to Memphis and Louisville and attended Georgetown's Midnight Madness last night.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera Set to Announce on Saturday; Georgetown, Louisville, Memphis and NC State the Finalists

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, a 6'3 combo guard originally from Indianapolis, IN will announce his college decision at 5pm on Saturday. The consensus top 50 guard is completing his high school ball at Oak Hill Academy in VA and has been John Thompson III's top target in the Class of 2012 since it became increasingly clear Kyle Anderson would look elsewhere.

From Coast to Coast Recruiting:

According to Brian Snow of Scout.com, D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera will make his college decision this Saturday at 5:00 pm est. The Oak Hill Academy (VA) guard who was once a Xavier commit is down to Georgetown, Louisville, Memphis, or NC State.

Smith-Rivera has taken official visits to Georgetown and NC State.  He was accompanied by Oak Hill teammate and NC State commit Tyler Lewis for his official visit to NC State.

Smith-Rivera recently canceled his visit to Memphis and was scheduled to attend Louisville's March Madness but canceled that visit as well.  Based on that it would appear that he's down to Georgetown and NC State, but in this wacky world in which hipsters march on Wall Street thinking they are making a difference, there's just no telling what may happen.  Stay tuned.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera To Visit Georgetown This Weekend

With conference realignment talk driving everyone crazy, let's turn the focus back to what John Thompson III and Georgetown can control - the basketball team.  This weekend, consensus top 50 guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera will visit Georgetown, and after Kyle Anderson spurned the Hoyas for UCLA, "DSR" has become a primary target in the 2012 class.

The Hoyas are the perceived leaders in DSR's recruitment, but newcomers NC State and Memphis are making a move for this high scoring guard.  Xavier, the school DSR originally committed to and then decommitted from, is also a major player in his recruitment.  DSR has also gotten looks from UCLA (bastards) and Michigan State, though at this point those destinations currently look unlikely.

Kyle Anderson Says No to Georgetown and Big East, Will Attend UCLA

In the most hotly contested recruitment in Georgetown history (or at least the most tweeted about), Kyle Anderson, a 6'7 point guard who was an unqualified dream fit for the JT3's offense, decided to forgo his destiny as a Hoya and attend UCLA. Anderson chose UCLA over Georgetown, St. John's, Florida, and Seton Hall, which tried valiantly to keep the New Jersey native at home including having an in-home visit this evening.  John Thompson III and staff made every effort to reel in the nation's #5 recruit, but in the end couldn't compete with Anderson's desire to play on the West Coast in a system that has sent numerous guards to the NBA and possibly alongside fellow recruits Shabazz Muhammad and Tony Parker.

Just one week ago this recruitment felt like if Keanu Reeves choosing between the red and the blue pill in The Matrix with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. However, now that the Big East is disintegrating before our eyes and may not even exist in two years, we have bigger concerns than where some kid from New Jersey goes to school. With Georgetown seemingly continually in the wreckage of upheaval, the potential of the implosion of the program (at least it's source of funding) for the coming decades is giving Hoyas fans plenty of other things to despair over.
