Holy crap.  That was quite a game.  Georgetown defeated the #1 seed Syracuse Orange today in Madison Square Garden, 91-84.  Chris Wright led the Hoyas in the finest performance of any Georgetown player this entire year.  Wright had 27 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists while carrying the Hoyas for the entire game.  It wasn't just the statistics for Wright, it was his poise in shredding the zone, the timing when he hit huge shots, and the control he showed running the point position.

Syracuse shot 54% from the field and 55% from three point range and still lost.  And by now everyone recognizes just how good this Syracuse team is.  Yet, today at least, the Hoyas were better.  This game was phenomenal, back and forth, up and down, each team making runs, playing their guts out.  And Georgetown was better.  It was Wright's virtuoso performance, Austin Freeman icing free throws and attacking the basket, Greg Monroe guarding our rim like Georgetown heroes of yester-year and Jason Clark hitting dagger three after dagger three.  Georgetown was better.  If nothing else, that has to give us fans a lot of hope for the next month.  We just played one of the three best teams in the country, took every shot they had, and still won.  Syracuse did not overlook us, they were not flat, they just got beat by a better team today.

Monroe, Freeman and Clark chipped in 50 points, scoring 15, 18, and 17 respectively.  Hollis Thompson played 25 minutes, contributing 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals and more than a few heart attacks with those free throws.  Vee Sanford scored 2 points with a beautiful floater, those measly points just happened to be the two points that gave us our first lead since early in the first half.  What's great about Thompson and Sanford is that they are contributing, they can be trusted, and they will continue to help Georgetown as this month wears on.  Hopefully Julian Vaughn is back to full strength soon, he seems to still be fighting the flu bug.  Also hoping Arinze Onuaku's injury isn't too bad, nothing worse than not going into the tournament at full strength.  If Syracuse is going to make a deep run they need to stop relying on threes and run their offense through Wesley Johnson.  Outside of Evan Turner, he is the best swingman in the country, and damn near unguardable for the Hoyas.

Georgetown's defense was erratic for the first 25 minutes of the game, there were too many open layups and open Rautins threes, but we really clamped down in the second half, getting steal after steal and protecting our glass.  The defense keyed transition baskets for the Hoyas as well.  I'll say it once, I'll say it again, as long as we come with defensive intensity, we will be in every single game.  The bad losses weren't from offensive execution, they were from lazy defense.

More than anything, this game put Chris Wright on a different level than he was before, and I'm very happy for him.  He takes a lot of crap from Georgetown fans, and all he's done is come out the last two days and been the MVP of the entire Big East Tournament.  Big East voters must be kicking themselves a bit for Wright not even getting an honorable mention on any post season tournament team.  Hopefully he is using that as fuel to continue his dominant effort in the tournament.

Georgetown will play the winner of Villanova and Marquette tomorrow night.  I'm fine seeing either team, although the Revenge Tour 2010 would continue if we played Marquette.

Plenty more tonight and tomorrow.  HELL YES WE BEAT CUSE.

Y'all Came to See Georgetown Play: Georgetown Thrashes USF 69-49

Exacting revenge on Dominique Jones and his cronies, the Georgetown Hoyas beat South Florida 69-49 in the 2nd round of the Big East Tournament.  The Hoyas got absolutely no help from the referees, who apparently were very interested in South Florida's tournament aspirations.  Julian Vaughn played about 10 minutes and fouled out, Greg Monroe was saddled with 4 fouls, 3 of which were complete nonsense.  Hollis Thompson and Chris Wright joined the party with 4 fouls as well.

Yet, all that said, and Georgetown won.  And they won pretty easily.  Chris Wright had 15 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds, and 0  turnovers, in his best performance of the year.  We've been hard on Wright, but when someone needed to step up, it was Wright.  Monroe, even with his foul trouble, scored 16 points, and put the game out of hand in the last 4 minutes with back-to-back three point plays.  Jason Clark added 16 points, including some monster 3 pointers.  Austin Freeman played smartly, with 8 points and 4 assists, yet had his worst shooting performance of the year, going 3-12 from the field.

Any time you can beat the 9th best team in the conference by 20 points, getting about 25 combined minutes from your big men and a 3-12 shooting day from your best player, you are impressed.  Georgetown's defense, except for the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half, was phenomenal.  More than anything, our defense will be the key to sustained runs in the Big East Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.  Keep it up fellas.

Good news is Monroe and Vaughn will be plenty rested as the Hoyas square off with Syracuse for the THIRD time this season.  I'd write more but my hands are shaking and my vision is blurry.  Man, isn't tournament time the best?

Plenty more to follow today and tomorrow.  Enjoy the NIT Dominique, I'm sure people from far and wide will want to come watch you play.  Syracuse, we're coming for you.

Country Road, Please Take Us Home: Hoyas Roughed up in West Virginia

After trailing by 17 at the half and by a whopping 26 just minutes into the 2nd half, yet another spirited Hoyas comeback that cut the deficit to 9 with just over 5 minutes to play was was thwarted by Georgetown's own inner demons, as a couple of bad turnovers on successive crucial possessions led to easy conversions on the other end that extended the lead.  WVU never led by less than double digits the rest of the way and cruised to an 81-68 win.   The loss drops Georgetown to 19-9 (9-8), and its mysterious "Tale of Two Halves" season marches on.

I'd probably be angrier about the result, but did we really expect anything different without Austin Freeman playing?  The second half comeback, however, is going to put blinders on a few things that can't be ignored.  The worst takeaway for me about this game is that the Hoyas didn't do anything that they haven't been doing over the course of the past dozen games or so:

The 20 turnovers?  How many times can Jason Clark or Henry Sims lazily throw the ball TO A PLAYER ON THE OTHER TEAM on the perimeter?

The 67% from the charity stripe?  How many times can Greg Monroe front-rim a free throw attempt?

More frustratingly, how many times did the Mountaineers have WIDE OPEN THREES?  I have seen the Hoyas play WVU at least a dozen times - EVERY GAME IS THE SAME!  Guard the damn three!

A 17 point halftime deficit?  How many times can we expect to win games like this?  Memo to the coaching staff: this strategy of falling behind by a crushing burden early and attempting to get back into the game while the other team is sleeping on its lead is just not working.

What is the problem here?  Because whatever it is, it sucks.  And not just in the "Oh, it's OK they'll turn it around" kind of way, but the worst kind of way, the Syracuse kind of way, where the dark cloud that has seemingly enveloped this team has blackened the sky and removed any rays of light that may be yearning to seep through and save our season.  OK, maybe that was a bit overdramatic, but I like the word 'seep.'  The Hoyas played hard in the second half, and I suppose all hope is not lost.  (I'll wait until after the Cincy game to make that declaration).

So pour yourself a cocktail and enjoy the soothing sound of John Denver and this casual 'Country Roads' remix by something called the Hermes House Band, because the only way to completely move on from a loss to an opponent like West Virginia is to come to an understanding of what it is like to be West Virginia.

Almost heaven
West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River,
Life is old there, older than the trees,
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Tomorrow is a new day.

And hell, at least we have Vee Sanford.

#5 Seed Here We Come: Notre Dame Outclasses Georgetown 78-64

On a day Notre Dame was without its leading scorer, All American Luke Harangody, Georgetown came out and pooped the bed.  The Hoyas lost 78-64 in the Verizon Center, and it wasn't even that close.  Leading scorer Austin Freeman came down with a virus and only contributed 5 points with two airballed 3 pointers in the second half.  The Hoyas cut Notre Dame's lead to 4 points with 7 minutes to go, but Ben Hansbrough put the Irish on his back, scoring 19 second half points and 21 in total to lead Notre Dame to a victory.

Georgetown was outrebounded 24-13, giving up what seemed like 15 easy dunks throughout the game.  The game was pathetic to watch, from the top down.   It was clear that Freeman had nothing all game and got killed on the defensive end, yet John Thompson III stubbornly continued to play him.  Chris Wright and Greg Monroe couldn't pick up the slack, the Hoyas had lazy turnovers and didn't have any interest in rebounding or defense.

Hollis Thompson was the lone bright spot for Georgetown, scoring 12 points in his first career start.  Hopefully that will increase his confidence when we flame out in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The saddest part of this game is the realization that this team will not make any noise in the Big East or NCAA tournaments.  The maddening inconsistency and laziness has been there all year, and nothing is going to change in the next three weeks.  When it's all said and done, Georgetown won't get past the 2nd round of either tournament and wasted two years with Greg Monroe when he leaves for the NBA after the season.

I understand that Freeman was sick, and that hurts the team's confidence, but they can't go out on National TV at home and have a performance like that.  I don't have much more to say, other than this was the most disappointing loss of the season for me.  Considering we've lost to South Florida, Old Dominion and Rutgers, that's really saying something.

Austin Freeman led the Georgetown Hoyas with 29 points as Georgetown went on the road and defeated Louisville 70-60.  Freeman came out of the locker room at halftime like a man on fire, scoring 24 points, including 8 in the first two minutes.  Greg Monroe had another phenomenal game as well, contributing 16 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.  Chris Wright played a very wise game, only scoring 4 points, but controlled the tempo throughout.

Georgetown outrebounded Louisville 31-26, and Monroe completely outclassed Samardo Samuels.  In other good news, the bench contributed 12 points, with Hollis Thompson leading the way with 6 points on two three pointers.  In bad news, Jason Clark is in a bit of a slump, scoring 4 points on 1-4 shooting and Julian Vaughn seems to be banged up.  He only played about 20 minutes tonight and was laboring getting up and down the floor.

The Hoyas outscored Louisville by 16 in the second half, due to Freeman's flawless 20 minutes and a re-dedication to the defensive end of the floor.  We can wax poetic about Wright's double figures, the Princeton offense, and Greg's ability to finish with both hands, but the reality is that when we play with energy on the defensive end, we are a completely different team.

Waitresses in Louisville be weary tonight, Rick Pitino seems irritable and horny.

Notre Dame is next for the Hoyas on Saturday at the Phone Booth.  A double bye is still in the picture, we need to win the next three and Marquette needs to lose one.

Plenty more to follow tomorrow, for now I need to go to the gym, which closes at 10:00 PM.

Heartbreaker: Georgetown Loses to Cuse 75-71

What a tough loss, Syracuse beat Georgetown 75-71 after a furious comeback by the Hoyas.  The Hoyas were down 60-37 and fought all the way back to down 71-70 with the ball with less than a minute to go.  Jason Clark got a good look to win the game and couldn't knock down an open 3.  Like Chris Wright's miss against Rutgers, we have to wonder why we are shooting threes down 1 with Greg Monroe absolutely dominating inside.  With less than a minute to go, the ball needs to go to Monroe every single time.

Chris Wright was by far the best Georgetown player for most of the game, which is good news.  He played his ass off, looked for teammates, and did everything he could.  Unfortunately Georgetown's most consistent performer - Austin Freeman - had his worst game of the season, scoring 21 but on 8-19 from the field.

Nevertheless, I am proud of the Hoyas today.  They showed fight that we thought could be lacking, with rampant rumors of team infighting.  It was also nice to see their mental block against Syracuse vanish as they furiously fought back.  Interestingly, it was done on the defensive end, as Georgetown forced 20 Syracuse turnovers.

Tough loss, but a valiant effort.  Let's finish up strong with a nice winning streak.

Plenty more tomorrow, for now I'm going to pour myself a warm glass of milk, rest my throat, and suck my thumb.

Georgetown Upset by Rutgers: Hoyas Lose 71-68 In Worst Game of the Year

Look ahead to Villanova, lose to South Florida.

Look ahead to Syracuse, lose to Rutgers.

The Hoyas handed the Scarlet Knights their first victory against a Top Ten opponent in seven years, as poor shooting from the field and foul line plagued Georgetown throughout the game.

Chris Wright mailed in one of his worst performances as a Hoya, taking ill-advised and selfish shots en route to a 2-8 performance from the field while playing uninspired and lazy defense.  Austin Freeman failed to break the 20 point barrier for the second game in a row and shot a woeful 1-5 from beyond the arc.  Greg Monroe, despite leading the Hoyas with 19 points, contributed 5 of the Hoyas 14 turnovers.

Lot more blame to go around in the coming days, as the Hoyas have a four day break to re-evaluate things.  Georgetown has not won three straight Big East games since the 2007-08 season.  Looking forward to the players' uplifting and forward-looking Tweets, shame the rest of us can't move on as fast.

Until we beat the teams that we are supposed to destroy, this year has first-round exit written all over it.

If anyone needs me, I'll be at the warehouse.
