Stop the Presses: Georgetown Football Competing for a Conference Championship?!?!?

I can't believe I am writing about Georgetown Football two days before the opening game of the Georgetown Basketball season but as Iwillpaytheway pointed out, the team deserves some recognition.  On Saturday, 30 minutes after the Men's Basketball team tips off at the Verizon Center, the Georgetown Football team will take the field in Bethlehem, PA for a chance at its first Patriot League title in school history.  The only thing standing in the way are the mighty Mountain Hawks of Lehigh.  Overly dramatic?  You bet'cha.  But this is important stuff.

Big East to Offer Boise State, Navy, Air Force and UCF; Raise Exit Fee to $10 million

We interrupt today's joyful Midnight Madness coverage to bring you news that the Big East is being proactive!

NEW YORK (AP) -- An official in the Big East tells The Associated Press that the conference plans to double its exit fee to $10 million dollars, then invite Boise State, Navy and Air Force as football-only members, and Central Florida as a member in all sports.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Big East had not authorized anyone to speak publicly about its plans, said Commissioner John Marinatto was in Cincinnati meeting with representatives from UCF.  The official said those invites could be out as early as next week.

The Big East said earlier this week it wanted to expand to 12 football schools.

Good news as far as Conference survival goes, and I look forward to casual road trips to Orlando for Hoyas-Knights. No doubt we'll have more on this in the upcoming days, weeks, months, and years, especially since that $10 million exit fee will be chump change for the current Big East schools that are looking to leave for greener pastures.

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose: 2011 Georgetown Hoyas Football Preview

The Georgetown Football Hoyas begin another illustrious campaign on September 3, 2011 when they face off against Davidson in what we here at THE GLOBAL PHENOMENON are dubbing "The Redemption Bowl".  Since Stephen Curry went bananas against the Hoyas in the second half of the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2008, things haven't been rosy in post-season play for the men's basketball team.  The basketball team will have to rely on their oft-forgotten little brothers on the football team to reverse the Curse of Curry.

You may remember the Hoyas starting out like a house on fire last year, winning three of their first four games and threatening to crack the Top 25.  Unfortunately, they lost their next six before a thrilling 14-7 victory over Marist to end the season.  The Hoyas return the core of their 2010 team, including standout defensive end Andrew Schaetzke and cornerback Jayah Kaisamba.

RIVALRY WEEK: Georgetown vs. Colgate

It is one thing to talk about our hatred of UConn or Syracuse, or even those sons of bitches at South Florida, but let me tell you, there is probably nothing that gets our blood boiling more here at THE GLOBAL PHENOMENON than when we play our most hated rivals at Colgate.

The semi-unstoppable Peach-Bowl-bound Georgetown University Football team will enter into an epic battle with the Colgate, uh, (checking Wikipedia...), aha, RAIDERS today at 1pm.  This will surely be a tough road-game test at Colgate's stadium in, I think Pennsylvania or maybe New York, but certainly somewhere in the northeast.

We are under very strict rules for the use of images from the Internet so this guy hauling peaches is literally the only thing I could find to illustrate Georgetown's run to victory in the Peach Bowl.  It is somewhat ridiculous.  THANKS ALOT SBNATION LAWYERS!

A little bit of history to the rivalry:

Hoya Football Domination Continues: Georgetown Beats Holy Cross for First Time Since 1999

Hoyafootball_medium

What has gotten into the Hoyas?!?!  After mounting an impressive 17-7 victory over conference foe Holy Cross at Harbin Field, Georgetown is sitting atop the Patriot League standings with a 2-0 conference mark, and 3-1 overall record.  Had it not been for a last second touchdown by Yale last weekend, Georgetown would boast an undefeated record and be primed for Rose Bowl glory.

Homecoming.  A time to remember the past and toast to the future.  A place to mingle with old friends doing new things.  And an event where one can get black out drunk and run over by a car.  Ah, college.

Georgetown Hoyas Rose Bowl Dreams Dashed by Yale

Yale scored from the 1 yard line with no time left on the clock to defeat the Hoyas 40-35.  The loss likely leaves the Hoyas, who trailed 27-14 at the half, on the outside looking in when the BCS Bowls are announced at the end of the season.
