Robert Churchwell, a Gonzaga graduate and former Georgetown standout, has been named boys’ basketball coach at Good Counsel. Churchwell replaces Blair Mills, who resigned last month after four seasons, citing a desire to focus more on his family.
“Being from D.C. and having played in the [Washington Catholic Athletic Conference], the opportunity to come home and coach in the best league in the country and in the league I played in were two things that drew me to this position,” said Churchwell, who will also teach physical education at the school.
Last season, Churchwell coached at Benedictine, leading the Cadets to a 31-4 mark and the VISAA Division I state title with a win against O’Connell. After earning All-Met honors at Gonzaga, Churchwell was a standout forward at Georgetown from 1990-1994 before playing professional overseas and briefly in the NBA. He then coached for six seasons at Harrison High in Georgia.
