  • Following the trend of the season, Georgetown played two very different halves of basketball. Although the offense was slow in the first half, the team's shooting (with the exception of FT's) was fairly on par. Instead, Georgetown's efficiency was brought down by a lack of quality opportunities. The high turnover rate and low offensive rebound rate led to fewer possessions and too few possessions ended in efficient opportunities (FTs and shots near the basket).
  • Georgetown's efficiency boost in the second half was a result of dominance in the paint. In the 2nd half, Georgetown shot a season best 82% on shots close to the rim and 45% of possessions ended in an attempted layup or dunk. Georgetown then reversed the poor offensive rebounding in the first half by rebounding 53% of misses in the second period.
  • On the defensive side, Georgetown played its best game of the year by holding High Point to 30.7% eFG% and a 20.2% turnover rate.
  • The FT rate for both teams was under 10% and may be a result of the refs calling a loose game.

  • The Colgate game looks very similar to the High Point game, except in the 2nd half Georgetown's offense and defense did not perform nearly as well.
  • Georgetown's poor first half was the result of poor outside shooting with the team converting only 10.5% of all jump shots. While bad shooting nights can happen, what worries me more is the focus of the backcourt on jump shots. The poor jump shooting combined with the low assist rate (33% and low FT rate (5.7%) suggests a stagnant offense that isn't creating enough high quality opportunities.
  • In the 2nd half, Georgetown improved its shooting close to the basket and the perimeter shooting was slightly better, but unfortunately the defense allowed Colgate to shoot at a similar efficiency level in the 2nd half (eFG% 50.0% Gtown to 50.0% Colgate / TS% Gtown 59.2% to 61.8% Colgate), including allowing Colgate to shoot 80% close to the rim.
  • Georgetown did do a great job creating possessions through winning the glass on both ends and turning the ball over at an average rate.

Adjusted 3-pt Makes

This doesn't account for shot selection, but can help to calm down everyone's emotional swings by trying to adjust for volatility. A positive number indicates that the expected points were greater than the realized points. For players w/ 25+ attempts, shooting percentages are from this season and if not shooting percentages for each player are from the 2012-2013 season when available. Otherwise, the team's 3-pt percentage for the 2013-2014 season is used in the calculation for each player.

HP +10.2 / GTOWN -3.7 / HP +13.9

COLG +16.7 / GTOWN +11.8 / COLG +4.9

Georgetown missed a lot of 3's, but so did Colgate and that makes the result more discouraging because the difference in expected 3's and the HD boxscore suggests that this game wasn't just close due to "bad luck" from a Georgetown fan's perspective.

Stay Casual, my friends.
