A Rivalry Halted

What do sports fans love to talk about more than their own team?

Their Rivals. And how horrible they are (Jim Boehim really is horrid, hopefully this turtle scored some bonus points)

But as of today, well really a month ago, Maryland, Athletic director, Kevin Anderson has decided to stop all sports from competing with Georgetown until the Men's Hoops impasse is resolved. Halting the budding WBB rivalry, which really is a shame.

Star-divide

Most Maryland fans do not think highly of Kevin Anderson, but this move seems to have spurred favor with the fan base. But there is a sentiment that most Georgetown folks just don't care to play Maryland. I think beyond just Geography, playing this game every year makes loads of sense. It'll be a great boon to recruiting, an easy sell out game which would produce plenty of revenue to go around.

So I'm just curious to know, as a collective representatives of Hoya Nation, do you guys care?

Hope to see you at the Comcastle next season.

On a side note, in a year or so, we'll have to deal with the awful Jim Boeheim, any tips?

Stay Casual, my friends.

I think a Georgetown Maryland series will be good for the city

But think Anderson took the absolute wrong approach in trying to get one started. He just showed his hand and there isn’t much there…

If the Duke-Georgetown series starts up again, no chance Georgetown schedules Maryland.

Also, John Feinstein needs to stay away. The BB&T is a completely different issue

Good talk.

Recent alum

I bet if you ask any Hoya who came to Georgetown during the JT3 era, the answer is no one cares.

3 Reasons:
- “Georgetown Bubble”: A cross-metro rivalry doesn’t appeal to most of the student body, who are mainly non-DC residents. More often than not, the two most detested games for the student body are Syracuse (obvious) Villanova (because everyone has friends who go there). A vast majority of the students don’t have a tie to UMCP or friends who go there. So there’s no one at Georgetown, except for program die-hards who know their history, really upset about the lack of a GU-UMCP game.
- Program perception: Most students, when asked for the reason as to why there is no game between GU and UMCP are inevitably pointed back to the USAir debacle. The main takeaway for GU fans is “Gary Williams and UMCP were classless and were petulant about what counts as a home game”. Anderson’s approach here just reinforces the “classless reputation” (whether deserved or not) that Georgetown has of UMCP. Further, you don’t punch down to a petulant irritant, which leads me to my last point…
- Quality begets quality: The last game we had against you was a thrashing. No one left the Old Spice Classic thinking “man, we should play Maryland more often; what a close, awesome game!”

Would it be a fun game? Maybe. Do I have a list of about 15 non-conference foes I would rather play than UMCP? Absolutely, with Kansas topping it (I remember in ‘08 there was talk of that game occurring, which would have been awesome).
-
As far as Boeheim is concerned, don’t play him in the state of New York. Otherwise, officials will forget basic rules (ask Bob Huggins) or pull out ridiculously obscure ones (ask Hollis Thompson). Though, he’ll inevitably get sick of being the team in the north that no one in the Carolina league respects and leave Syracuse sooner rather than later, so you won’t have to deal with him that much.

Not if he were the last coach on earth

As to playing Maryland, karma’s a bitch. Next.

My impression from that article is that Kevin Anderson = HDC.

until we play them in men’s basketball. Then, we play eachother in EVERY sport.

He knows we’re not in their conference right?

And it’s Georgetown’s problem to fix UMD’s financial problems. UMD Kick Rocks!!!

Georgetown is a national program.

Playing UMD does not hurt or help us which means you are not relevant to us

Just curious

but having grown up with the Texas-OU and Texas-Texas A&M rivalries, I am pretty sure that to have a real rivalry both teams/fan bases have to despise each other.

And we are really just indifferent to UMCP. It’s like Coastal Carolina pitching a fit that Duke won’t play them annually. Or CCNY or Manhattan bitching at Syracuse.

I don't think

Maryland is quite that far behind Georgetown.

But here’s my take, you guys are 100% right Maryland needs Georgetown to play them more than Georgetown needs Maryland. (To be honest, you’re right, Georgetown doesn’t need Maryland at all)

But let’s fast forward 3 years. All indications are that Maryland Hoops is back on the up-tick, if you follow recruiting at all, you’d know this. And the big east as you know it might not be so, Cuse, and Pitt are leaving for the ACC. Yeah you guys hate Cuse, but they’re a fantastic hoops rival. West Virginia is all but gone. Louisville and Cincinnati are going to the Big12 at the first chance they get. You get Memphis coming in, maybe Temple, but the Big East is taking a huge step back in college hoops.

The point I’m getting at is, and you guys won’t want to hear this, but it’s not difficult to imagine a scenario in which Georgetown hoops needs Maryland on the schedule. And if you don’t think our Athletic director isn’t thick enough to say “You didn’t help us, we won’t help you.” You gotta be kidding yourself because he’s the biggest dolt we’ve ever hired.

I'm sure that

once ‘cooler heads’ prevail, talks could resume again. However right now, it’s not good for both parties at the moment, b/c of the situation that came about.

List me under

the really just indifferent. Kevin Anderson should just become lunch buddies with Mark Plotkin and Bum (aka John Feinstein).

After that last, unholy row,
I never, ever play, basketball now.
It joins a list of things I'll miss like fencing foils and lovely girls I'll never kiss.
