thoughts on Oscar nominations

War Horse was by far the best movie I saw this year, though I haven’t yet seen The Artist.

I enjoyed The Help and was glad Jessica Chastain got a Supporting Actress nod.

Reality check: Bridesmaids just wasn’t that good. The movie went south as soon as the plane diverted to Milwaukee or wherever the hell it was instead of landing in Vegas.

Solid firepower in the acting leads categories and with Billy Crystal back as host I’m actually looking forward to the show.

Nearly walked out of Extraordinarily Long and Extremely Boring

Casually.

Two Brad Pitt movies up for Best Picture

Means it probably wasn’t a great year for Hollywood, even if they are now nominating 50 films per year. I think the Artist will clean up but Gary Oldman should get a long look for Best Actor.

Completely agree re: Bridesmaids. It’s like they were trying to decide between The Hangover and Wedding Crashers, and instead they just got the anxious build-up of the former (without any payoff) and the painfully boring “friendship/life in crisis” part of the latter.

by WarmupEwing on Jan 24, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

Agree with you both on Bridesmaids

Thought The Artist was fantastic. The most surprised and enthralled I’ve been by a movie in years.

Did not see War Horse but More Like Awesome Freeman hated it.

Have heard very good things about Hugo.

Let's settle this with a poll.

by wadetandy on Jan 24, 2012 9:55 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

The Artist was astonishly good.

Not only was it interesting to put one’s mind in the place it needs to be to watch a silent movie, but the fact that they used that setup to play with the audience was pretty excellent.

Also, John Goodman was fantastic in it!

Tinker Tailor had great acting, but was pretty difficult to follow. Still, it was nice to see Bane and Commissioner Gordon had worked things out enough to be in scenes together.

The Albert Nobbs makeup guy should win.

Why so Syracuse?

if Oldman gets snubbed I’ll be upset

admittedly, I am also a huge le carre fan.

They even got along with that stuttering english king, for a time.

I think the fact that you like Le Carre might drive that.

Not saying that’s a bad thing…but you probably have a leg up on the pacing and all.

Oh for sure

But I had trouble just remembering characters by name and that made some conversations tough to engage with. I have no idea how to fix it, because I don’t want five men who know each other having a conversation where they constantly use each other’s full name, but that tripped me up.

Also – very casual tax returns for Romney. $42 M over the last two years — $ 6 Mil in taxes, but $7 M in tithe. Why is there not a seperate category for Comedies

Seems like there should be a separate oscar for best comedy.

Comedies and Drama are completely different and should not be judged against each other.

by hoyasincebirth on Jan 24, 2012 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

I completely agree with this

would rather drop some of the dramas for a new comedy category.

Also Tintin and Arthur Christmas should have been in best animation. ahh growing up – seeing more of the best animination nominations than best picture nominations.

by bunk moreland on Jan 24, 2012 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

While I agree with you premise

That would break the Internet. Picture all of the snark and complaining that goes into the Oscars already, and then multiply by a million and you have an inkling of what would happen should anybody try to get an official “Best Comedy” award going. Most people like funny movies; “fans of comedy” are the most insufferable people of all time. Plus it would just spawn another brood of unnecessary “other” award shows.

I have a hard time

Not backing the NCAA when its them v. UConn

by TBird41 on Jan 24, 2012 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

agreed

look Boatright isn’t playing right now because if the NCAA finds something than they’d have to forfeit games he played in while under investigation. In theory if Uconn truly believed the Boatright’s had nothing to hide then Uconn could say we believe in our player and play him.
Of course it’s very easy to violate a NCAA rule and the NCAA might take such a move as hubris and maliciously try to find a rule he had broken so not to look bad.

That being said the rules are there for a reason and I don’t believe that the NCAA is evil or doing things wrong. I do believe that a) they need more people to make sure they catch all these rule breakers b) when they do catch groups breaking the rules actually punish them severley un like what they did to Uconn this last time.

The NCAA is an agreement among colleges. They agreed to all these rules and regulations and yet they cry foul when they’re enforced. The NCAA can have whatever selection and exclusion criteria it chooses. It’s also ridiculous that the author acts like going to college to play hoops is the only option for these kids. It is possible to go to Europe of the NBDL and start your career that way. It’s not the best way, but no one is forcing these kids to go to college.

by hoyasincebirth on Jan 24, 2012 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

The NCAA is evil

Doesn’t mean that schools should cheat. But pretty much everything about the NCAA is meant to screw over players (See, transfer rules, 1 year scholarships, Chris Weinke/Jeremy Bloom hypocrisy, etc). Nothing like making billions off the backs of 18 year olds.

It's three years off, so theoretically the whole system could implode by then

Without any offense to the Naval Academy or Annapolis, which is a pretty nice town, it’s just another sign of the league’s downward spiral. They are a mid-tier football program in their good years. As far as basketball goes…they are, at best, an average Patriot League team that probably couldn’t cut it in the A-10, much less the Big East.

If anything, having to play Navy at least once a year should at least force us to play a stronger non-conference schedule.

well there will be about 15 of us up in the nosebleeds somewhere with binoculars and umbrellas to fend off the inevitable barrage. if the game is close, I’m highly considering asking whatever security is there to surround our row and escort us out. not that they will care or actually help, but it’s a nice thought

Any students who are going should swarm the bookstore for them.

Why so Syracuse?

by HoyaJoker07 on Jan 24, 2012 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

After the dip spit incident

I actually suggested that we put together another road trip and have an entire block of students ready to put up umbrellas and cause all kinds of entertaining line of sight problems for Cuse fans as soon as things got thrown at them.

And then I think that was the last ’Cuse roadtrip that was possible for the next couple years, and it never happened.

Umbrellas are a triple threat...

1. Defense – great shield
2. Offense – closest thing to a weapon you’re probably allowed to bring into the stadium
3. Element of surprise – if it has a button that pops it open I’m sure you could stun them for long enough to run away

Philly plays an annual round robin among their "Big 5"

I find it hard to believe that something similar at The Phone Booth wouldn’t draw terrific crowds and make for wonderful rivalries. How about Georgetown, Maryland, James Madison, James Mason, and VCU? Maybe even Richmond too.

by DrTox on Jan 24, 2012 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

I woul think it should be

Georgetown, Maryland, GW, George Mason, and Maybe American.

VCU and Richmond already have their rivalry game they play every year and James Madison is far away and not relevant.

by hoyasincebirth on Jan 24, 2012 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

Nothing to gain from exposing yourself...

to a possible loss to Mason from time-to-time

I’m fine with playing Maryland…

Don’t really feel compelled to play anyone else locally on a yearly basis

by VictorPage'sLeftEye on Jan 24, 2012 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

Agree with this lineup

You should probably have all 5 entrants be from different conferences, and Mason/Madison/VCU are all CAA. Plus makes sense to keep it an all DC-ish thing. GU, UMD, GW, GMU, and AU is a good mix of schools. I would definitely put American in there as they seem to have a small-but-lively crowd.

by vivanloshoyas on Jan 24, 2012 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

how much attendance do you think the big 5 actually draws?

because a lot of the games are played in small arenas and it’s been losing it’s draw outside of traditional rivalry games a bit with the strengthened conferences.

a lot of what makes the big 5 viable is that they play on-campus at arenas that are all either within the city and on a SEPTA subway route or a 20 minutes train ride away.

DC heads oversell the big 5 idea. Better to just have an annual game against MD and maybe GW, but be prepared to have more MD and GW fans than G’town fans at “home” games if it’s at verizon.

by thejerseytornado on Jan 24, 2012 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

we probably don't want/need to play all 4-5 every year

But perhaps some kind of modified BB&T – everyone plays on Saturday, then winner vs winner and loser vs loser on Sunday? Plus you could rotate the “first round” games so it wasn’t the same opponents every year. We could use ticketing arrangements to encourage the others to see VC as “neutral” territory (plus as has been noted, I don’t think it’ll be tough for other schools to achieve parity of support or better vs us).

stupid accidental return...

only one tournament per year. shouldn’t waste that on a small, local thing. need to be national.

I do hope we see a regular rotation of facing local teams. I think JT3 sees the advantage in that too, but not too many in a year and there are a whole bunch of financial issues to clear in regards to payout for the game, etc.

It’s time to play a home-and-home with maryland, bottom-line. The last game was in 93. let bygones be bygones, no admission of guilt on either side—just play the damn games.

by thejerseytornado on Jan 24, 2012 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

All I want to see it Gtown Maryland

Gtown GMU – maybe. Gtown AU/GW/Howard is ok, but we played two of those this year and it aint no thing.

Has to be at verizon, split the tickets. Never go to comcast.

I'm a Nova..

adult with an inflated sense of ranking. Sorry, but Temple is a level below Nova. Nova’s won or tied for the Big 5 win 5 times in 10 years. Temple 3. I’ve noted postseason success above. Where, exactly, is Temple comparable to Nova in the past decade? I don’t think Nova is better than Temple based on some inflated sense of ranking. I think Nova is because they are.

right today? by being better than nova this year

and being a much bigger draw in the city, imo, than nova. and I’m about to become nova faculty, so I should be pro-nova. but temple’s better this year and if both teams got to the tourney and faced each other, philly would definitely root for Temple over Nova.

Yes this year...

and of course Philly loves Temple more than Nova. Many more Temple grads in the Philly area and the whole class issue/dynamic. It’s that way regardless of record. Doesn’t make them a better program.

“Despite falling at Notre Dame on Saturday, Syracuse is still the class of the Big East. But after its first loss of the season, and with Marquette and West Virginia surging, it’s not out of the question to think the chase for the conference championship could turn into a three-team race.”
