And Now There is Video of the Battle of Beijing
This is honestly worse than I could have ever imagined. Reports from China are that all players and fans are safe.
From SportsGrid
I picked a hell of a day to quit sniffin' glue.
UPDATE: ANOTHER VIDEO HAS SURFACED.

Ok, the foul calling was pretty egregious, but chanting it’s alright, it’s ok, we’ll default on those bonds someday didn’t really help matters.

Wow
Far worse that I initially thought. Glad no one was hurt. I’d say screw the serious and come home.

He picked up a chair, but JC pulled a hit and run… lol

Doesn't the PLA own most of the Nike factories in China?
I could see some sinister external influences working against us; I’d put the chances at slightly greater than zero.

according to a Uconn message board poster
Hawaii got into a similar brawl against a Chinese pro team a couple days ago.
thanks for the excellent coverage of all this, guys
all the best to the team while they continue over there
excellent comment at end of espn article

I am a St. John’s supporter and let me say for the record I have a ton of respect for the Georgetown guys and coach Thompson. What happened to them was terrible. And unexpected too, as I would have expected the Chinese to be excellent hosts. After being so maltreated, I was impressed by the diplomatic message sent out by Thompson after the game.
Casually.
As a Syracuse fan, I generally enjoy your misery
But that shit was mugging. Who was the GTown player that got run off the baseline and stomped on behind the basket?
Aaron Bowen. he's been having a rough summer
shot wasn’t falling @ kenner, gets into beef with Whittington, and now this.

Talked to my boy on the ground via shady monitored gchat channels
He went over as part of the group of students who went with the team.
He said the police got all the Americans out pretty quick. No players or kids were hurt, but he did say some older Gtown fans were injured, like 75-year-old people.
They’re not coming home. They’re going to Shanghai which is 3 hours from Beijing.
Gtown didn’t start anything, they were just playing physical. He thought it was bound to happen though. He said the refs were cheating for the Chinese but it wasn’t helping them.
I thought maybe the team would have been pumped or felt closer as a team after the incident. Apparently they were just really upset and for the most part just want to come home.

not surprising. why want to extend a trip where they pull that shit?
this was supposed to be fun for them. i don’t see how cheating refs, dirty play, a brawl + getting shit thrown at you is “fun.”
hopefully they do feel closer, but that doesn’t mean they should look forward to playing again in china. i wouldnt.

agree
they are in legitimate hostile territory. and its not like they can take an hour bus ride to escape.

Worst part is this is a professional Chinese Mens basketball team that feels it necessary to jump a Gtown team that has 10 Freshman and Sophomores on it… Men vs Kids disgraceful

At about the same moment, in the upper right of the cluster
You can see Hollis try to break it up and suddenly field actual kicks.
Why so Syracuse?
It’s a real shame that these kids had a lifetime experience permanently stained in this manner. I question the wisdom of the persons doing the scheduling. This was not just a professional team, but a military one to boot. Did anyone notice that the police did nothing to break it up? That’s because it was a military team. Very big oversight on someone’s part considering there are plenty of teams to play over there.
And while I am in favor of diplomacy and grace, JTIII’s statement goes overboard. Say you regret the incident and hope to finish the tour in peace. The drivel about how wonderful China is blah blah blah, maybe that’s called for if there has been a whisper of regret out of the Chinese team or the Chinese government, but since there has been ZERO that statement just ends up pissing me off.
I have it on good authority
That in China, they sleep at night. I don’t think their silence over the last 12 hours should be interpreted as an insult, they’re probably just waiting for the right Party bosses to show up in the office to sign the official statement.
My universal rule of governments: when in doubt, blame the bureaucracy.
by HoyaSmacksYa on Aug 18, 2011 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Fair enough, but if there is not a statement out of someone on that side of the equation pretty soon, perhaps addressing the fact that police/security made no move to restore order even when chairs were used as weapons, I will renew my point with extra vigor. Chinese teams have a reputation for this crap.
i doubt we will hear anything
most of the anti-bayi “tweets” have been disappearing from weibo and media coverage of the incident rarely lasts more than 30 minutes.
the worst thing for the chinese is that american outlets have downloaded and spread pictures/videos of this event. otherwise they would just pretend like it never happened.
i think thompson’s response was appropriate considering the team and its fans are still in china.
Good talk.

Agree on Thompson's response
It would be one thing if the players and their families weren’t still in China, but it’s quite another to take risks in that situation. His statement was definitely appropriate. Also, contrary to the beliefs of all the behind-the-desk UFC fighters on the Internet, no one who matters is keeping score of tough-guy points.
In a non-fight story line..
Looks like Jabril was wearing number 55.
Wonder what @Hoya2aPacer thinks about that…
Doing my part

Chinese Police WTF!!!!!!!!!
I went back several times and freezed frame both videos and checked out all the pics and found the same results, no police interaction. The Chinese cops were just standing there watching the whole thing, motionless!!!
