Georgetown to Play Alabama In The 2011 BIG EAST/SEC Challenge
The Georgetown Hoyas will play the Alabama Crimson Tide on December 1st in the 2011 BIG EAST/SEC Challenge. The game will take place at Alabama, and is a rematch of Georgetown's only appearance in the competition to date when the Hoyas defeated Alabama by a score of 70-60 in Birmingham in 2007.
More after The Jump:
The new BIG EAST/SEC Challenge format features 12 games over three days beginning on the Thursday after Thanksgiving of each year. The 2011 schedule will include four games a day Thursday, Dec. 1 through Saturday, Dec. 3. In an odd inferiority complex agreement between the conferences, the event title will alternate to the SEC/BIG EAST Challenge in 2012.
ESPN will provide coverage of all 12 games on ESPN, the Deuce, the U, and perhaps the Ocho. The new BIG EAST/SEC Challenge will mark an expansion of the SEC/BIG EAST Invitational, a four-year event from 2007 to 2010 that featured four matchups between the two conferences from two neutral sites.

dumb
we played bama in 07-08
cuse played florida in 09-10
pitt played tennessee in 10-11
unoriginal and uninspiring matchups
Good talk.
Casual Hoya
Amateurs. It's easy to make interesting and new matchups.
For Instance:
Georgetown clearly should be playing @Mississippi State. The two teams are closer to the same level based on preseason predictions and you have a story line of Coach Kirby returning the Starkville to Play his old team.

i'd much rather face a good team.
so while that’s got a better storyline, i’m happy we’re getting a team ranked in the preseason over the sh*tshow that is Miss State.

I waited all day on pins and needles just to get Alabama at 'Bama again?
Will probably be a good game, but would have preferred something new.
Casually.
At least ther matchups are better than the ACC v. B10 challenge
great oppurtunity for our young team. They’re going to get tested early and often in this out of conference.
Bama is predicted to be a top 15 team. + Maui + Memphis at home(presumably)
could take our lumps early but will make us a better team come big east play.
At least Reggie Rankin is bullish...currently on the front page of espn.com
Reggie Rankin: Otto Porter, a skilled small forward with matching feel for the game from small Sikeston, Mo., is a three-time state champion who dominates game in and game out. Porter was virtually unknown until I saw him in early December 2010 at the Marshall County Hoop Fest, where the future Georgetown Hoya dropped 29 points,13 rebounds and eight steals while making it look not only easy, but routine. Porter entered our rankings soon after and rests at No. 41 overall in the final rankings.
"Before the answer was a 3, I was down in Georgetown with a Hoya chick, lawyer chick....."

“Sleeper game in SEC-Big East Challenge could be Alabama-Georgetown. Curious to see the Hoyas young core against the rising Tide.”
So now this thingy has become true road-home games?
Much better than the “kinda sorta” neutral garbage
Alabama newspaper reacts
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/05/alabama_will_play_host_to_geor.html
“The opportunity to host a program with the tradition and reputation of Georgetown is one that our team is looking forward to and I know our fans are as well.”
“The Crimson Tide and Hoyas have met four times and split those games. Most recently, Georgetown defeated Alabama 70-60 in a 2007 Big East/SEC Challenge game at Birmingham.”
“n the event of a 6-6 tie this year, the Challenge trophy will remain with the conference that won the previous year.” That would be the SEC.
JT3 aint never scared...
this could go badly for a young team though

Alabama will be a solid team
Good young PG (Releford) and a tough match up in the post (Green). Should be the favorite in the SEC West, and a dark horse for the overall conference title.
Living only 45 minutes from Tuscaloosa, this one makes me very excited.
They play so fine, don't you agree?
by FreeForThree on May 19, 2011 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I voted "snoozer" because we played them a few years ago
And then I remembered that I will be living in Alabama when this game happens. Suddenly excited.
What are these assertions!?

punxatawny phil
i think the term “moral victory” is a term that’s going to be used with great frequency on this site in 2011-12
Casually.
slim to none
considering jt3 has said he will not schedule like previous years.
dont we get a return game from memphis this year?
Good talk.

I maybe mistaken
but I think they pushed this off a season (till ‘12-’13) because they are both playing maui. I remember reading about this, but it may have only been discussions and nothing came of it.

won't necessarily get moved
Memphis and Tennessee have had to play eachother twice before because they were in the same tournament and have a yearly series. So it happens.
I hope it doesn’t get bumped.

As long as it's not ODU...
At McDonough…I don’t care

We ought to be hosting one of the "stateside" Maui games
Against a team that won’t be traveling to Maui. I would hope the tourney organizers are setting up some high-visibility opponents for the “real” Maui teams if they think this two-stage gimmick is going to work.
by HoyaSmacksYa on May 19, 2011 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions
yeeeeaahhhhhh, doubt it's high visibility
Kansas is playing Towson on Nov. 11 for their pre-Maui game http://www.kuathletics.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/042411aab.html# so I seriously doubt it’ll be a “marquee” opponent. Michigan is also playing Towson on Nov. 14 blank">http://www.umhoops.com/information/future-schedule/ otherwise I would’ve put money down on our pre-Maui opponent being…Towson.
Now, I’d check the odds on playing the field w/ a MEAC team bet.
