Kenner League Recap Saturday 7/17 - Jeff Green Shows Off, Austin Freeman Gets Tough

Jonathon Wallace, J.D. and I were able to get to McDonough for only one game yesterday and we made sure it was the 4:40pm Tombs game since we haven't had a chance to see them play yet.  Well worth it.  Not only did we get to see Austin, Hollis and the 4 rising freshmen but yes Jeff Green decided to show up for the second Saturday in a row. JT III and his dad were also in attendance. A few casual observations...

Kenner observations after The Jump:

Austin looked great and very fit. He had some great shots and really commanded the floor. I expected more from Hollis. He really hustled but...eh. As for the newbies, I thought the standout was Markel Starks. Fast, aggressive and made some great shots. Still rough around the edges but definitely the point guard of the future. Aaron Bowen also was impressive. Moses Abraham and Nate Lubick both had some good plays...and some not-so-good plays. Moses snagged some nice rebounds and if he can keep that consistent, he will give Julian some much needed rest time. And Jeff Green...what can you say its Jeff Green. Still a phenomenal player with a great smile and just looks like the nicest kid in the world. He was great passing to the younger players and setting them up for plays but then every once in a while decided to show off a bit...some great, really deep 3 point shots with a hand right in his face. He was also apparently wearing Kevin Durant's new shoes which aren't on sale yet. Team Turner seemed to be full of Maryland and GW players including Terp Adrian Bowie who was a standout. But Tombs won 69-61. The last few minutes were painful while the other Coach - who didn't get the memo that this was summer league and was taking the game WAY too seriously - kept yelling for his players to foul even even though there was no chance for them to cut the lead. Another fun thing - we were sitting in front of Rich Chvotkin, the voice of Georgetown who has been the announcer for a few years longer than I have been alive. It was fun to listen to him chat to his friends about the players. Also sitting in the section next to us was Father McFadden, the other voice of Georgetown, i.e. the announcer at home games. Also famous for performing the marriage ceremony of our own lordnick. Oh, and Austin and a player on Team Turner got into a little tiff with two minutes left. Not sure exactly what happened to cause it - maybe low blood sugar - but all of the sudden there was a lot of shoving and dropping of F bombs. Both players were pulled from the game before it got worse. If anyone saw what actually happened, do tell.

Stay Casual, my friends.
