Yes We Can! Georgetown Hoyas defeat the Duke Blue Devils 89-77
"[Last year] is over, its done. This is a much different team," said Thompson. "I think this team can beat anyone in the country if we do what were capable of, and they know that."
In front of numerous dignitaries including President Obama and Vice President Biden, the Georgetown Hoyas beat the Duke Blue Devils in impressive fashion, 89 - 77 at Verizon Center. Chris Wright and Greg Monroe led the Hoyas with 21 points each, and Austin Freeman chipped in 20 as Georgetown's 'Big Three' made a big statement on national TV. Georgetown shot a blistering 71% from the field and the defense held Duke to 37%.

The Hoyas improved to a whopping 16-0 when Chris Wright scores in double figures, and are now 1-0 when Obama and Biden take in a game from courtside. For an interesting read, check out the press pool report of Obama at the game.
We'll have more on this one later, but for now, soak it in and get hammered Georgetown fans, this was a big win.
Are we looking at a 2 seed?

What a Game!
Has any game ever been more satisfying? The Hoyas played like a em>textbook on the game; the refs, for once did not seem taken in by the Dukie flop; and, god, it was nice to see Duke wiping our floor. Two more things to make it an absolutely perfect game: if I’d been sure the president was a fan and if there’d been more close-ups of the K-Rat’s pouting face.
No one will love it more if we go all the way, but really I’ll never ask this group of guys or Coach for anything more than this absolute spanking of the most disgusting team in basketball. Anything else is icing.
On a previous post, there’s really plenty to hate about Duke without a homophobic slur; let’s respect all Hoya fans.
casual greetings from england
On behalf of all casualhoya.com fans in london, I hereby appove kim kardashian in a bikini. Solid thumping by the hoyas. Here’s to hoping lordnick got to enjoy the game the way only he can rather than working it

Took longer to get home than it did to play the game
Totally worth every minute. Great game, and the crowd at Verizon Center was at their best. The sparse Duke following was drowned out (though they didn’t have much to cheer for) until most of them left midway through the second half.
Awesome game
Great job by fans greying the place out, you barely saw any Duke fans, much less than than the amount of opposiing fans you see at games vs. UCONN, Cuse, WVU games.

Tell Obama to show up every game!
Since he doesn’t have to worry about the healthcare stuff anymore. And now I assume ESPN has to say something about us since we beat ESPN Blue Devils. Dookie V hates us now.
Obviously...
Dookie V
He accepted that the BE is the best conference in basketball during the Kansas- K State game, specifically because we beat Duke.
though he did say we were midlevel big east team
we’re the third best Big East team, hardly mid-level

great game, great shooting
I am not sure Duke would finish in the top half of the BE. They are not better than UConn and I think they would have trouble with Marquette and Notre Dame.
Tip o the hat to the Verizon Center for starting the national anthem while Barack was still shaking hands.
Our big 3 play like that – it is ova. Hoyas win, Duke sucks, took the kiddos sledding, great Saturday.

Hollis
If Hollis starts hitting 3’s off the dribble, it is going to be a very enjoyable spring. I hope we had a huge section of recruits there for this one. “You wanna play in front of the President of a Syracuse car dealership or the President of the United F’ing States?”
It only gets better from here
for Hollis.
JTIII should turn him loose vs. USF, see what he can do.

I must say that I did start....
feeling my wallet start to get a bit lighter when Hollis hit that second three……
Did you notice him on the Jumbotron when they were reviewing on replay whether his foot was behind the line, telling the ref that he was also hit on the wrist…. Trying to get a 4th point out of the shot?

the only way to contain Hollis
is to foul him. :)

IF he scores 18.....
I’ll buy him a steak dinner as well as you…….
As long as that would not be considered an NCAA infraction…… I’ll have to check with John “One Step Ahead Of The Law” Calipari on that one
Maybe the problem all along is that he just needed the POTUS in the house to nail the 3’s…..

coincidentally
I went to Yates to shoot some hoops this afternoon and work off my hangover… saw Hollis and Vaughn working out with some assistant coaches. He came by the basket I was shooting at and I said “Great game Hollis, that was fun,” to which he replied in a very relaxed way “Haha, yeah that was fun.”
Hollis Thompson now having more fun = steak dinners for everyone.

It must be weird seeing Hollis in person
On the court he looks skinny compared to Vaughn and Monroe, but at 6"7" he probably towers over you in real life.
Good to hear he’s working out on a Sunday.

I will uphold my deal…….
I hope that I lose my bet….(but not against USF) against Villanova, Syracuse and/or West Va…….
Stop up for that beer, TheYellofAllYells, against ‘Nova……. (there is a possibility that I will be sitting with friends in the lower bowl for the game…but I will apprise you in advance if that is the case…… otherwise follow JGD’s cue)

He Did Get Fouled
They showed a pretty clear replay cutting into a tv timeout. Hollis got dinged on the arm after he released the shot.
by The Ambassador on Jan 31, 2010 12:49 PM EST up reply actions
Looks a little too much like Summers
Maybe it’s a size thing, but I’d like to see Hollis play a little more like a forward. We’ve had bad experiences with 3-men who try and play like 2’s.
Benimon...Just Because
…the bench gets so much abuse it is nice to appreciate a job well done. Solid performance today on both the offensive and defensive ends (including a block). I like the way Jerelle is beginning to gain confidence and attack the hoop. He will learn how to put it in the basket in the Big East in due course. In the meantime, he is drawing fouls and draining his foul shots. Nice assist for the the 3 today too off the Monroe pass.
I think the team proved a lot today. Well done!
With paraonoia,
Great day, great game
Kyle Singler is forever known as the arctic monkey.
Anyone else think the refs were on crack for this one though?
yes
I’m not sure this is what you meant but for me, objectively speaking, we got ALL the calls…and they did not let them play physical as much as they have done in conference games.
from the heart I say… that type of home court calls doesn’t make up for Cahill teeing up Monroe last year. I think it’s clear we would have won without that help though.

I thought the calls
Were just weird. We did get a HUGE amount, but conversely there’d be 2 minute stretches where they didn’t call anything on anyone, and then went and called everything on everyone. And some analyst was saying that we were playing too far over our heads. Said we’d be a 5 seed. Kinda pissed me off.
we didnt get all of the calls
for instance that non-charge they called a blocking foul on Jerrelle Benimon.
Wish the refs had just let them play.

Hollis and Jerelle
Looked comfortable on the floor together for the first time. Jerelle’s spirited play has awakened Hollis and made our team legitimately 7 deep. Can’t wait to face ’cuse and Nova again!

wow
just got back home from a day of walking around DC asking people “who won the game today”
majority, i am glad to report, knew that georgetown not only WON, but DESTROYED duke on national tv
Good talk.
The Hoya Curse Starts Now!
Now Duke will drop next 4-5 games to crappy teams after losing to us. See how well UConn is doing now. It also happened to other top ranked opponents and many of them dropped out of the poll.
Obviously...
total trap game
but SomebodyBuyAustinASteak has me believing that this could be a great time for the young Hollis Thompson to shine.

That's a good point
This Wednesday is the definition of a trap game. USF just beat Pitt Sunday and I can see us have a hard time focusing between all of the massive games we are playing and the Nova game on Saturday.
Tough 5-game stretch
USF’s RPI sitting at a respectable 54. Came within 1 of beating ND, now have beaten Seton Hall and Pitt back-to-back. This was not a fluke win like their win over Marquette was last year.
The tough 5-game stretch we just finished is now a tough 7-game stretch, with this week tacked on. This league is brutal.

No Excuses
If we’re an elite BE school we will beat USF on our own floor…I hope the students show up….but check out these games….Elite teams don’t have trap games at home (except if it’s against Old Dominion) Go Hoyas.
Louisville 73, USF 52
Syracuse 82, USF 65
West Virginia 69, USF 50
Cincinnati 78, USF 70

I think that the boyz will be focused......
especially after the big game yesterday……. and JTIII proclaiming that “they can beat anyone in the country” [ Gulp….Double Gulp….what the H*ll is he trying to do creating bulletin board fodder like that ]….
BUT what sets this team apart from last year’s team (other than other Big East ADs not fearing that they need to wrap their backboards in protective foam due to Mescheriakov)… is that we have beaten who we should have (other than ODU…Marquette doesn’t count after shooting the % they did from 3 point land…that was somewhat flukey…sort of like our % yesterday against “one of the best defensive teams in the country”….lol…Not!)
Go Hoyas……

just finished watching the game for the third time
once live at VC, twice on DVR. It does not get old, no desire to fast-forward through a second of it. Love Greg’s “child please” moment, the crowd derision for the late dook dunk, all the steals and easy saunters to the basket, and the sight and sound of a grey out that looked great on TV (especially given that Verizon is really not known as the most intimidating of venues).
That was just an end-to-end pleasurable experience. And a stellar ad for both the school and the program – future gtown athletes will get off on crushing Duke, and future gtown students will get off on hanging with the Prez.
Hoya effing saxa…
