When a Win is a Loss: Hoyas Defeat Temple 46-45
That was just gross. In case you were one of the lucky few to not be subjected to the 2 hours of torture, here's the in-game thread with some commentary and pics from inside Verizon.
More on this "game" a bit later.
I need to take a shower. Maybe two of them.
On the bright side Temple +9 was free money.

Awful.
Three sixteen ounce beers for $7.50 each and now back at the office covered in shame in front of my coworkers.

Tie
At least that tie will help. I hope that you took it off.

I know we like to dwell on the negative over here. And there was plenty of that. But I like the mental toughness down the stretch to win the game. We didn’t have that last year.

A win's a win?
Always easy to focus on the negative but I’ll agree to an extent – Temple is a very well coached team that didn’t make many mistakes.
I’m not sure that mental toughness is quite the right phrase to use but the very end of the game did show that our best player can score when he gets the ball. No question he ran from it toward the end of the game, camping out at the three point line and not getting under the basket but he had a few nice finishes when it counted.
Clear issues that the team has going forward: Rebounding – abysmal outside of Monroe; Bench – Thompson gave the team some very nice minutes while Simms laid an egg; Inside depth – Outside of Monroe and Vaughn, there’s no chance our guys can defend in the post; Getting shots – in the first half, Wright and Freeman did solid jobs attacking and getting some layups but it was all on the right side of the court and we definitely struggled to get the ball to the basket later in the game (interestingly, though, for a lefty, Monroe finished a crazy right handed drive to get the go-ahead)
RepublicansWearNikes raised the question in game and I think this will be a resume pad – if only as a win – not sure about the rest of the A10 but Temple is a quality opponent and getting an ugly win against them should help down the road.
As others have noted, however, Georgetown is overrated and has a lot of work to do over the season.

Pathetic, sad, and awful
Really looked like they were missing Summers out there. And Jeremiah Rivers. I want a refund on my tuition check.

Tulane students are geniuses
As I noted in triumphant appearance on the Talking Hoyas podcast, the Tulane students began serenading the Hoyas with an ‘over-rated’ chant with 8 minutes left in the first half and Georgetown leading by 8.

ouch
This was the 4 p.m. game in ESPN’s 24-hour Tip-Off Marathon, but it was more suited for the 6 a.m. should’ve-stayed-in-bed snoozer.
The halftime score was 19-13, with Georgetown leading by default. Here are more ugly facts from one of the worst halves of basketball ever seen at the Verizon Center:
There were more combined fouls (14) and turnovers (13) than made baskets (12).
Both teams shot 1-for-10 from 3-point range.
Ryan Brooks, who scored 23 points in Temple’s season-opening win over Delaware, was 0-for-6 with two turnovers. He finished the game 2-for-14. Monroe, the Big East rookie of the year last season, was 1-for-5 with three turnovers in the half.
Temple shot 19 percent (5-for-26), Georgetown a relatively robust 30 percent (7-for-23). During one painful stretch, the teams combined to miss 11 straight shots.

This game
may have set the game of basketball back a few decades. I thought for a second that we had Chaney patrolling the sidelines for us again.
Regardless, “good” win today. Do all of us Temple fans a favor and stomp the hell out of Villanova. Good luck the rest of the way.

Oh my...........!!
OK………just finished watching the game on Tivo here on the West Coast. Key takeaways:
1. We WON. I know it was ugly but we found too many ways to lose last year. Winning ugly is a good sign and Temple is not a bad team. Not a great one either though.
2. We lack leadership in the backcourt and frontcourt. Mmm…where does that leave us?
3. Austin Freeman looks a little lighter and played a little faster.
4. Chris Wright looked out of control mostly. The 3 pointer under a minute was ridiculous, especially coming after a time out. Is there an offense here? Or is it an offence? We so miss JWall!!
5. Monroe looked like he regressed compared to last year. Yes…the Owls were tall but give me a break. Where is the attitude and the drive? Does he not believe he is an NBA first rounder (or lottery pick) in the making
6. As to secondary players, Jason Clark looked ok, Julian Vaughn showed some promise, Henry Sims was useless, and Hollis Thompson looked like he got beat consistently on defense. Nikita hung out at the three point line and waited for the pass that never came….until he tried to take it to the hoop and showed that he can’t dribble AND drive!!
7. DaJuan was not missed. This team can win if it gets its act together based on the talent that remains. Why does JT III not just kick Greg Monroe in the but and tell him to take control?? How complex is this? How many games over the past 3 years have we seen Jeff Green or Roy Hibbert take 6 shots as we lose. If we have a dominant player, let’s get him the BALL!! I am not hopeful on Chris Wright as a point guard. I almost think we should give the ball to Jason Clark and just let Chris focus on driving or shooting. His decision making is terrible.
8. It is great to get a game with a decent team early to see what the weaknesses really are. Kudos to JT III for that!!! I was at G’Town when JT II ruled and we never saw an opponent until December or January (remember Coppin State, Murray State, ok we still play Savanah State).
9. Austin Freeman and Chris Wright could both shoot the 3 coming out of high school. What has happened to their shooting?? Does the Princeton offense just cause these skills to rust away???!!!
There is hope but there is also concern.

A few thoughts from section 104
Good things:
- We won the game. There is no doubt that we lose that game last year. To win a close, ugly one early in the season SHOULD help going forward.
- Greg Monroe showed up for the two most important plays of the game. Though he was mostly silent, he took control for the GW layup and then came up with the big block on the other end.
- Austin looked solid for the 2nd straight game. He will be our most consistent player in the 2nd half.
- Chris was very strong in the 1st half. Still needs better decision making down the stretch, but was the only one awake in the 1st half.
- Julian and Hollis seem to be decent role players. Neither is going to take over a game or be the difference maker, but they will get better and should continue to do the little things to help the team win. I liked that Hollis got some crunchtime minutes and played well in that time.
- Defense. Temple is not a good offensive team, but Georgetown played (mostly) lockdown D on them all afternoon.
Bad things:
- Greg still needs to be way more assertive on the offensive end. When he couldn’t get it going last night, the offense was stuck in the mud. He needs 18 and 11 every night for this team to be on track offensively.
- Henry Sims simply cannot be relied upon. He has shown flashes of growth and talent, but last night he showed neither of those things. He looked plain awful.
- Still way too many 25-seconds-left-on-the-shot-clock three pointers or as they are better known: ‘DaJuan Summers Specials.’ If the first couple of those don’t fall, we have to stop shooting them.
- Only see three reliable scorers at this point, one of whom is often reluctant to take over. Jason Clark could get there to be the 4th, but there just is not much scoring depth on this team. That isn’t good.
- Obvious things like turnovers and poor shooting, both of which should improve as the team gets more playing time together in real games. Rebounding is still an issue, but at least yesterday it wasn’t as much about hustle as it has been in recent years. Greg and Julian were busting it after every shot (as were the guards), but they just weren’t holding on to the ball or the other guys happened to be in better position. I think this will improve.
All in all, I’ll take the win. We didn’t shoot well, which should not continue to be the case (at least not as poorly as we shot yesterday) and there are a myriad of things to be concerned about and improved. But we got the win, which is something that was important early in the season. I think it is fairly obvious that they can only get better from here and hopefully this will give them confidence in close games.

a win is a win
and at the end of the day when ESPN shows its good wins / bad wins – this will show up in the good wins column and no one will care it was such an ugly game.
that being said – this team needs a lot of work. the combination of height and no strength is embarrassing – monroe/vaughn have been outplayed down low by pretty much every big man they have faced, even when we beat uconn last year, adrien had a great game.
assuming that this is the norm and not an aberration, and we will be continually outplayed in the paint, guards need to step it up. freeman cannot go 0-4 from beyond the arc, especially when the majority of the shots were open looks.
we have 4 games before a brutal week where we play two top fifteen teams in a 5-day span, at neutral sites on opposite sides of the country. unfortunately, i think american will be the best game to judge if the team has improved – and that is two and a half weeks away
Good talk.
